Summary of Opportunity

The Senior Associate Dean for Education reports to the Dean of LKSOM and is responsible for the oversight of LKSOM student education programs: including undergraduate medical education (UME); graduate student education programs (MS, PHD, MD/PHD, MA, MS-Physician Assistant); and post-baccalaureate programs. The Medical Education Associate Deans, Student Affairs Deans, and Graduate Program Associate Deans report directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Education and together, collaborate to create an environment of academic excellence, professionalism, diversity, inclusion and teamwork that fosters student and faculty success. The Senior Associate Dean for Education provides the strategic vision for the LKSOM educational strategic plan and works directly with the Senior Associate Dean for Continuous Quality Improvement and Accreditation to execute strategic planning activities. We are particularly interested in dynamic individuals from diverse backgrounds and under-represented groups.

The Senior Associate Dean will:

  • Report directly to the Dean of LKSOM and serve on the Dean’s Leadership Committee.
  • Oversee all educational and administrative aspects of the MD, Graduate, Physician Assistant, and Post-baccalaureate programs, including resource management.
  • Lead the strategic and operational efforts for LKSOM to create viable graduate level programs consistent with the School’s mission.
  • Support and mentor the career development of the Assistant and Associate Deans who are direct reports.
  • Ensure the undergraduate medical curriculum aligns with School of Medicine strategic objectives; participate in the evaluation of the curriculum via collaboration with the Associate Dean of Curriculum and Curriculum Committee.
  • Ensure that the Student Handbook and all education related policies are reviewed and updated annually.
  • Meet at least monthly with student leadership to address student concerns and update students on issues such as building safety, mistreatment, changes to the curriculum and policy changes in full alignment with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and program staff.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Associate Dean for LKSOM Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement to assure that all programs meet their respective accreditation standards; ensure that processes are in place for collecting and evaluating data to verify that each student receives a quality education.
  • Foster an environment of diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students in all activities
  • Support the Associate Dean for Interprofessional Education in directing the strategic operations associated with the Kozera Teaching Academy, to help expand faculty development programs in educational methodologies and best practices; collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs to align programs in the Kozera Teaching Academy in support of faculty development.
  • Recommend candidates to the Dean for faculty administrative positions related to the education program, including associate dean and director positions and authorize any significant changes in administrative procedures and systems.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Administrator for Education to approve budgets submitted by underlying units to LKSOM finance and any large expenditures during the fiscal year.
  • Participate in the search for key administrative positions.

Candidate Qualifications

This is a full time, tenure track, faculty position in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and reports to the Dean. Minimum qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. and/or a M.D., and a distinguished record of leadership in medical education. The successful applicant should have a record of excellence in education, including first-hand experience in the development and implementation of preclinical and clinical medical education curricula. Candidates must have strong administrative and leadership skills and a commitment to graduate and medical student education. Candidates should have demonstrated the ability to lead a diverse group of faculty and staff members and be able to clearly articulate her/his vision for innovation in medical education. The level of faculty appointment will be commensurate with the experience and academic achievement of the selected candidate.

The Lewis Katz School of Medicine (LKSOM) offers the highest quality educational programs designed to train the next generation of physicians, medical researchers and healthcare professionals. Lewis Katz School of Medicine Education Programs

The Doctor of Medicine degree program, established in 1901, prepares students for careers in all specialties of medicine. LKSOM is well-known for excellence in clinical training such that graduates are well-prepared for the next phase of their education in residency and fellowships. Temple also has a caring, dedicated faculty who strive to guide students to achieve the essential milestones and graduation competencies in a supportive, caring learning environment. The student body is dedicated to supporting each other and serving their patients and the communities of our North Philadelphia and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania campuses. Temple’s dual degree programs provide medical students with myriad opportunities to broaden their education and best meet their career goals.

Temple also offers two Post-baccalaureate Premedical programs. The BCMS (basic core medical sciences) is for career changers who did not take the required science courses as undergraduates. The ACMS (advanced core medical sciences) is for students who want to deepen their understanding of the core sciences before entering medical school. Students who complete either program and meet pre-determined criteria have direct admission into our MD degree program.

Temple’s graduate degree programs in the Biomedical Sciences provide our students with the tools to become successful basic and translational research scientists in academia and industry, while our MD-PhD programs train clinician scientists for rewarding academic careers. Temple’s MA degree program in Urban Bioethics trains students in the ethics and values of health, health care delivery, and health law and policy in diverse, urban populations. The integrative curriculum of our Physician Assistant program provides excellent clinical training to students who will care for patients in our North Philadelphia community and beyond.

Temple University, a comprehensive state-related research university, is the 28th largest university in the United States. Founded in 1884 by Russell Conwell as an informal adult-education outgrowth of his Grace Baptist Church ministry, Temple College was chartered in 1888, and incorporated as Temple University in 1907. Founded in 1901 as Pennsylvania’s first co-educational medical school, the Lewis Katz School of Medicine has attained a national reputation for training humanistic clinicians and biomedical scientists. The school attracts students and faculty committed to making a difference in patient care, research, education and public service — at home and across the globe.

The School of Medicine and Temple University Hospital (TUH), its chief clinical training site, provide care for patients from throughout the region seeking advanced tertiary- and quaternary-level care. In addition, TUH serves one of the most vulnerable populations in the nation, providing more free and under-reimbursed care than any other hospital in Pennsylvania.

There are 20 clinical departments in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, comprised of over 550 full-time faculty, 50 part-time faculty over 800 volunteer faculty, and more than 1000 employees.
