Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) invites nominations and applications for the next Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Located in ERAU’s Prescott, AZ campus, the College’s mission is to graduate students that are profession ready. The College focuses on student success by offering high-level access to faculty mentoring, innovative as well as classic teaching methods, and transformational learning opportunities that empower students to achieve high goals. The College offers 13 bachelor’s degrees within the departments of Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biology and Chemistry, Humanities and Communication, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. Additionally, there is a School of Business under the auspices of the College, which is run by an independent Director.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor and Associate Chief Academic Officer, the Dean of College of Arts and Sciences leads in accordance with ERAU’s mission and goals. Among the Dean’s general responsibilities are to consult with the College’s 54 full-time and 30 part-time unique and diverse faculty members to develop curricula; provide leadership for assessing existing programs and developing new ones.  The Dean also directs the 16 instructors in the Army and Airforce ROTC groups and provides leadership to the General Education Committee.  The Dean administers the College’s budget of $8.9 million; recruits faculty; takes a leading role in other faculty personnel matters, including tenure, promotion, and renewal; helps the College realize its commitment to diversity; strengthens the College’s profile in research and graduate education; promote interdisciplinary research and teaching; represents the College to external constituencies; and leads College development activities. The College of Arts and Sciences currently has an Associate Dean who assists with these leadership responsibilities. Study Abroad, and our Embry-Riddle Language Institute (ERLI) are housed within Humanities and Communication and report to the Associate Dean.

Successful applicants must have credentials meriting appointment as a full professor in their discipline, including a terminal degree in their field, distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and academic leadership as well as an administrative record that demonstrates the following: a commitment to a liberal arts education; innovative and effective leadership in higher education; a collegial administrative style that promotes a sense of academic respect and collaboration with faculty, staff, and students; an ability to foster strong connections between internal and external constituencies; experience working within a diverse community of students, staff, and faculty in a complex academic setting; and a record that evidences a strong commitment to diversity and success in enhancing it through the recruitment and retention of faculty and students from underrepresented groups. Candidates should have significant experience in reconciling differing opinions and developing solutions within a shared governance model. The successful applicant will articulate an ambitious vision for the College and will have demonstrated experience with strategic planning, extramural funding, assessment, graduate education, and interdisciplinary approaches to research and education as well as a commitment to private fundraising. Candidates should respect a variety of approaches to scholarship and demonstrate ability and commitment in strengthening an environment that fosters and supports interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and teaching.
