Boise State University (Boise State) invites nominations, expressions of interest, and applications for the role of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The University

Boise State is a metropolitan doctoral research university of distinction located at the heart of the region’s economic, political, cultural and creative hubs in the downtown of one of the fastest growing cities in the country. With a total of more than 25,000 students, including some 3,000 master’s and doctoral students, Boise State is the largest comprehensive university in the state of Idaho, serving more than 5,000 high school students through concurrent enrollment and more than 16,500 degree-seeking undergraduate students. It is the top choice for Idaho high school students and is a destination campus for students from California, Washington, and many other states around the west. Today, students hail from all 50 states and some 65 countries. Boise State was named one of the most innovative national universities in the country for 2019 in a U.S. News and World Report survey of higher education leaders. Boise State enrolls more than one-third of all students in Idaho’s public higher education system, confers nearly half of all bachelor’s degrees awarded by the state’s public universities, and is home to Idaho’s largest graduate school.

Boise State confers more than 4,000 baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees each year in some 200 areas of study. Programs are housed in the University’s varied academic units: College of Arts and Sciences; College of Business and Economics; College of Education; College of Engineering; College of Health Sciences; College of Innovation and Design; and the School of Public Service. In addition, Boise State’s Honors College is home to nearly 1,000 students from all majors and the Graduate College coordinates the university’s 12 doctoral programs and around 75 master’s degrees. More than 40 degrees and certificates are offered fully online (a number continually increasing), through a cooperative effort of the academic departments and the Division of Extended Studies.

Boise State has earned a Carnegie Classification of a High Research Activity Doctoral Universities and many of Boise State’s academic programs have achieved accreditation or approval by specialized professional organizations and agencies. In addition, Boise State has been described by the Chronicle of Higher Education as a university that is “demonstrably on the move” and was one of five universities in the nation recognized in 2017 by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities for innovative approaches to improving retention and graduation rates. Boise State University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). The most recent affirmation of accreditation, based on a full review, occurred in 2019.

Position Overview

The Office of the Provost is committed to creating structures and processes in a culture where faculty, staff, and students can thrive so that, together, they will accomplish the university’s mission. Boise State offers a high-quality undergraduate education as well as a supportive graduate school that cultivates the personal and career growth of its students.

The Provost reports directly to the President and as the Chief Academic Officer and will work closely with the President in continuing the ongoing transformation of the University as a leading institution of higher education and research. The Provost will oversee and lead all colleges within the University and work collaboratively with the university leadership team and the academic deans to lead the academic mission of the university.

Minimum Qualifications

The Provost must possess a significant, demonstrated level of experience, dedication, and ability to innovate to realize the Universities vision and mission. The incumbent must have the social and intellectual skills to constructively work with a broad internal and external constituency, utilizing a shared model of governance where agile progress is valued. In addition, the candidate must have a record in leading significant research and or creative activity.

The candidate must possess a PhD or equivalent terminal degree, and have a distinguished record of academic, leadership, including fundraising, and especially cutting-edge approaches in education and transformational research.
