Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology

The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2021. The area of expertise are open, but we are especially interested in candidates who specialize in one or more of the following areas:, 1) the intersection of technology and crime/criminal justice (e.g., cybercrime/cyber-security; computational/“big data” criminology; machine learning; and agent-based modeling for crime analysis/prevention, etc.) 2) race/ethnicity and criminal justice (including, but not limited to; policing and race; social justice movements; punishment and race; and the intersection or race, crime, and justice with technology). The position is a nine-month appointment with annual review, in-person and online teaching responsibilities, and the possibility of summer teaching. A Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or related field in the social sciences is required (ABDs may apply, but degree must be in hand by the start of employment). A J.D. alone is not sufficient for this position. Under extraordinary conditions, we are open to considering more advanced (e.g., Associate level) rank applicants. University teaching experience and a demonstrated record of research and publication are preferred. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

 

Housed in the internationally recognized Andrew Young School of Policy Studies (AYSPS), our department offers degrees at the baccalaureate and masters (both in-person and online), and doctoral levels. Faculty members are involved in a wide array of research and public service efforts, work closely with numerous state and local criminal justice agencies, and have a history of significant funding from federal, state, and local agencies. The department serves as the  home for three peer-reviewed journals (Criminal Justice Review and International Criminal Justice Review, Journal of Qualitative Criminal Justice & Criminology), and is a key member of various University research centers, including the Partnership for Urban Health Research, the Urban Studies Institute, and the Center for Research on Interpersonal Violence. The department is the lead entity in the recently launched Evidence-Based Cybersecurity Research Group, which was formed in collaboration with the University’s College of Law and Departments of Computer Science and Computer Information Systems. The department has also taken the lead on a component of the AYSPS Digital Landscape Initiative (https://aysps.gsu.edu/digital-landscape/) geared toward increasing the benefit and reducing the cost of knowledge generation, dissemination, and use, with a particular focus on cost-free materials for students and researchers. In addition, the department retains a strong working relationship with the Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Police Foundation through its Atlanta Police Leadership Institute and Atlanta Crime Research Center.
