San Marcos, California

California State University San Marcos seeks inquiries, nominations, and applications for the role of Vice Provost.

Since its founding in 1989 as the CSU’s 20th campus, California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) has grown to serve nearly 17,000 students across its four colleges and Extended Learning unit, with 43 undergraduate and 25 graduate programs. A comprehensive public university offering diverse academic programs, the campus prides itself on exemplary teaching, innovative and experiential curricula, and the application of new technologies to solve real problems. CSUSM is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and enrolls more American Indian students per capita than any other CSU campus. CSUSM is also a national model for student access and success; more than 50 percent of graduates are the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice Provost plays a critical role as strategic partner in the administrative oversight of the Academic Affairs Division and as a champion of student success. The Vice Provost will provide clear direction in annual planning and budgeting processes, course scheduling, enrollment projections, and the University’s accreditation efforts. Intentionally analyzing and utilizing data to inform strategy, the Vice Provost will coordinate cross-campus initiatives, allocate space, and project future trends to anticipate institutional planning, policy, business, and other decision-making needs.

The successful candidate will bring the creative and analytical acumen necessary to guide the university’s academic units through a critical time of change in higher education with a focus on furthering the campus commitment to equity and inclusion. The Vice Provost must be an exceptionally strong communicator and engage each academic department, school, and college, along with faculty, staff and student leaders to advance the work of Academic Affairs and collaborative institutional initiatives. In addition, the Vice Provost must bring an understanding of and commitment to demographic, social, and intellectual diversity; and a transparent, fair, and effective leadership style that will engender trust among all members of the University community.
