Dean, College of Law

The University of Oklahoma (OU) invites nominations and applications for the next Dean of the College of Law. Building upon the successful tenures of the last two deans over 26 years, OU seeks an inspiring leader who can help craft and execute an innovative and inspiring vision for legal education at OU. The Dean of the College of Law is the chief executive officer of the College of Law and reports directly to the Senior Vice President and Provost of The University of Oklahoma.

Founded in 1909, The University of Oklahoma College of Law is one of the great public law schools in the nation with small sections and class sizes that encourage a strong sense of community, accomplished faculty who boast international expertise, and a state-of-the-art facility featuring study rooms, court rooms, and classrooms equipped with the latest technology. As Oklahoma's only public law school, OU Law is the academic home of more than 800 students enrolled in the Juris Doctor, Master of Laws, Master of Legal Studies and various dual degree programs. The University of Oklahoma Law Center is the parent entity of the College of Law. The Law Center also includes the Donald E. Pray Law Library, OU Legal Clinic, Department of Legal Assistant Education, Oklahoma Law Review, American Indian Law Review, and Oil and Gas, Natural Resources, and Energy Journal (ONE J).

The University of Oklahoma is a thriving institution, one of the premier, comprehensive, public, R1 research universities in the nation, proud of its public mission and eager to continue its ascent up the ranks of excellence. OU has over 30,000 students and more than 2,700 full-time faculty members offering nearly 500 different graduate and undergraduate degree programs on three campuses (Norman, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa). OU is located in the heart of Norman, Oklahoma. The city of Norman, a vibrant community, is consistently a contender on “best place to live” rankings with outstanding schools, amenities, a low cost of living, small town charm, and a variety of recreational opportunities. Norman is located just 20 miles south of Oklahoma City, the capital and economic hub of the state of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City Metroplex, including Norman and several other suburban cities, is home to about 1.5 million residents, offering all the amenities of a major, modern metropolitan community, including rich cultural diversity and heritage, an abundance of the arts, superb dining and nightlife, major sporting and concert events, family entertainment, recreational adventure activities, and much more.

As the College of Law’s chief administrative and academic officer, the Dean provides intellectual and strategic leadership, guiding the College in its commitment to innovative, relevant education for current and future generations of students. Specifically, the Dean’s responsibilities include building relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other key constituencies to envision and realize the College’s goals for advancement. Such work includes consulting with and empowering faculty to revise and develop curricula; elevating the college’s high standards of teaching, research and service; administering the College’s budget; recruiting faculty; building an inclusive, collaborative community culture; taking a lead role in other faculty personnel matters, including tenure, promotion, and renewal; and advocating for and advancing the College at the University and national levels.

The Dean will work collaboratively with the OU administration, deans of other colleges, faculty, and staff to achieve OU Law and University goals. The Dean is also responsible for developing, engaging, and cultivating alumni and other potential donors and for facilitating school service and outreach to the state in support of its commitment to the mission of the University.

The next dean must be visionary, politically astute, and have a commitment to service and to diversity, equity, and inclusion necessary to advance OU Law and inspire its multiple constituencies. The ideal candidate will possess proven experience as an innovative, collaborative, and accomplished leader with a successful record of advancing complex organizations or institutions. Candidates must possess a J.D. or its equivalent from an accredited institution and a record of accomplishments (academic or experiential) to qualify for appointment at the rank of Professor.
