 Description:

The Department of Biochemistry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure stream position in the field of Biochemistry. We seek candidates who are using cryo-electron microscopy to address fundamental questions in the life- and health sciences. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an approximate start date of September 1, 2021.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology or related fields. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement our existing departmental strengths. Research excellence will be demonstrated by publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals; competitive scholarships or other research funding; presentations at conferences; strong endorsements from referees of high standing; and the submission of a research statement explaining short-term and long-term goals and the overarching relevance and novelty of interests. A track record of successful collaboration would be an asset. Candidates will be expected to pursue an innovative, independent research program that is competitive at the highest international level and be able to attract sufficient external research funding. This position comes with access to 120 kV, 200 kV and 300 kV (Titan Krios) electron microscopes – expertise in the use of these instruments is required.

Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellent teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels through a statement of teaching philosophy and interests. The statement could refer to previous experience as a teaching assistant or course instructor, leading workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or awards for oral presentations and posters at conferences. Reference letters should indicate the candidate’s suitability for undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Biochemistry is one of the premier academic life sciences departments in the world, with 70 faculty members and more than 250 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and this position, were recently strengthened by a $250 million donation from the Temerty family. The University of Toronto has one of the most concentrated Biomedical Research communities in the world, including 10 fully-affiliated academic hospitals and research institutes. This community attracts greater than $850M in annual research funding. Within this community, Toronto hosts one of the most productive clusters of structural biologists in North America. Structural Biology is a priority research area at the University and for the Ontario and Canadian governments.
