Stony Brook, New York

Stony Brook University, a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and widely regarded as a SUNY flagship, seeks a visionary and collaborative scholar, leader, and educator to serve as the Dean of the School of Social Welfare. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, the Dean is the chief executive and academic officer of the School and will provide vision and strategic leadership in collaboration with faculty, staff, students, and other key internal and external stakeholders.

The School of Social Welfare, which has experienced significant growth in recent years, is part of the alliance of five academic health sciences schools at Stony Brook University which includes Dental Medicine; Health Technology and Management;  Medicine; and Nursing, as well as the University Hospital, the Long Island State Veterans Home, Southampton Hospital, Eastern Long Island Hospital, and a network of over 200 health care facilities/practices on Long Island. The School of Social Welfare interacts with these units, which offer field experience to students while providing services within the SUNY system.

Committed to building a more equitable society based on the values of human dignity, inclusiveness, diversity, equality, and economic and social justice, the School of Social Welfare offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work, including two joint degree programs, and has a doctoral program in Social Welfare. In addition, it provides Continuing Education programs in a variety of areas and has agreements with a number of organizations throughout the Long Island and New York City communities.

Its distinguished faculty undertakes research in disability studies; trauma, addictions and public health issues in the criminal justice system; fatherhood among low-income and incarcerated men; intimate partner violence; and multicultural and immigration issues among other areas. The faculty has grown in productivity over the last several years and in 2019-20 submitted 41 grant proposals and received 14 awards, the most recent of which is a $1.84 million grant from NIH.

The next Dean will build upon the strong foundation in place and drive the creation and implementation of an ambitious vision for the future. The Dean will lead the SSW with transparency and fairness, establishing an identity for the School that embraces and capitalizes on the strength of its offerings, its relatively unique positioning amidst the Health Sciences, and the expansion of its externally-funded research endeavors, while continuing its collaboration with social service agencies and preparing students to proudly and competently serve the profession of social work.
