VICE CHANCELLOR FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA WILMINGTON

Wilmington, North Carolina

Creating Experiences for Life

THE SEARCH

The University of North Carolina Wilmington (“UNCW”) seeks an outstanding, inspiring, collaborative, and experienced leader to serve as its next Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (“VCSA”). Reporting to the Chancellor, this individual will lead a first-class, complex student affairs organization at a time of institutional growth and transformation. While ensuring  excellence in student affairs, the VCSA will be a builder of strong campus communities, an unwavering advocate for student needs, and a gifted administrator and colleague who will lead with trust and transparency to shape and promote a fully integrated student experience and enhance the strong existing collaborative connections between the curricular and co-curricular dimensions of student life. The VCSA will be charged with leading the division of student affairs in ensuring a safe and engaging environment that is inclusive for all students, and together with campus staff, faculty, and students, will propose and implement solutions for  diversity, inclusion, and equity in student life, student mental health and wellness, and student success. The next leader will build upon the strong legacy of nationally recognized student affairs leadership.

It is an exciting time to join UNCW as the university was recently elevated to doctoral status with high research activity (Research 2 University) and has accentuated a focus and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout all systems and divisions on campus. This is a terrific opportunity for an accomplished student affairs leader to serve students as a respected and trusted ally, and to lead the university’s efforts to provide the very best student experience.

The position requires a leader with strategic vision, collaborative skills, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and a thorough understanding of best practices in student affairs, student development, and auxiliary services. The successful candidate will be the students’ advocate first but will also bring the qualities and experience necessary to manage senior staff, a large budget during a changing and complex financial environment, and an appreciation for a division that keeps students at the forefront of every decision and program.

The VCSA will play a central role as a valued and collaborative colleague in the university leadership and Cabinet. Further, the VCSA will provide crucial leadership and counsel in the formulation of student policies and programs, fiscal requirements, budgetary recommendations, and strategic decisions that shape the undergraduate and graduate student experiences. The student affairs office operates with a $45 million budget with more than 170 employees and over 900 student employees. The VCSA is responsible for housing and residence life, student extracurricular organizations at the undergraduate and graduate level, the career center, student physical and behavioral health, parent and family programs, transition programs, and a variety of other student-directed services.
