Assistant Vice Provost and Director, Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support

Durham, NC

Duke University seeks a thoughtful, creative, strategic, and access-oriented leader to serve as its next Assistant Vice Provost and Director of the Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support (“AVP”). Reporting directly to both the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Executive Vice Provost, the next AVP will bring a strong understanding of and commitment to strategic stewarding of institutional resources, the advancement of equity and inclusion for students of all identities and socio-economic backgrounds, a customer service approach, a deep familiarity with national trends and challenges in financial aid, and a proven ability to build effective and diverse teams while also forging strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, and university leadership.

Duke University is a community of scholars dedicated to the idea that educational opportunities should not be limited by a student’s ability to pay. With more than half of the Duke undergraduate student body receiving some form of financial support, Duke is committed to enabling every admitted student the option to attend. This search is a tremendous opportunity for an accomplished financial aid leader to build upon Duke’s exceptional dedication to need-blind financial aid, a student centric approach, and focus on cultivating a diverse student body. The AVP will lead a team of 23 full time staff while working closely with the thousands of Duke University students who receive financial support. The incoming AVP will be responsible for assessing, developing, and managing Duke’s financial aid budget of approximately $187 million in support of the University’s need-blind admissions policy and need-based financial aid policy.

The next AVP will be an excellent and trustworthy communicator—engaging across campus with and advocating for the necessity of a robust financial program—to a wide range of stakeholders. The AVP will deftly balance compliance and creativity; a financial aid expert and the custodian of all federal funds at Duke, they will also bring an innovative appetite for strategy and change. The AVP will work closely with colleagues across campus in Undergraduate Admissions, University Communications, and the Provost’s finance and administration team to establish effective financial aid policies, practices, and communications strategies. The ideal candidate will be data-driven, team-oriented, compassionate, and inclusive. Success in this role will require an analytical approach, an ability to build rapport easily and empower others, an exceptional mastery of both oral and written communication, and an ability to leverage resources nimbly with a student-centered approach to administering aid. The ideal candidate will have thrived in complex environments of excellence, where expectations for performance and productivity are high.
