Senior Scientist, Directed Evolution

JOB PURPOSE

Sana Biotechnology is developing advanced delivery and genome engineering capabilities to enable the next generation of gene and cell therapies.  We seek a highly motivated and creative Senior Scientist to join our new Genome Editing Technologies group.  The level of this position will be commensurate with experience and skill.  The successful candidate will work with colleagues to establish novel technologies for genome targeting and cellular engineering that will directly impact the scope and power of our therapeutic programs.  The environment is exciting and fast-paced, and offers the opportunity to work and publish at the cutting edge of genome editing research.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work with the team to establish genome targeting platform capabilities
  • Establish and develop new gene editing and gene regulation technologies
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to expand the range and sophistication of engineerable behaviors that can be applied to our cell therapy programs
  • Communicate and document findings via verbal and written methods

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in scientific discipline w 5+ yrs experience in academic research and/or industry. BA or MS plus 8+ yrs or equivalent combination of education and work experience; Deep subject matter expertise and an emerging leader.
  • Strong publication record demonstrating proficiency in directed evolution
  • Exceptionally strong molecular biology skills
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize and select high-complexity combinatorial libraries
  • Ability to use available structural information to inform library design
  • A working knowledge of the energetics and kinetics of recognition processes
  • Ability motivate and frame new directions in protein design for genome engineering, and reduce strategic initiatives to an actionable plan
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to present effectively to teams with diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to adapt to increasing scope and complexity of work as projects mature
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced research environment with minimal direction, and able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities

Preferred Qualifications
  • Facility with one or more programming languages such as Python
  • Demonstrated high throughput and multiplexing capabilities
  • Ability to process and analyze large data sets
  • Familiarity with methods and concepts used to characterize the specificity of site-specific DNA-binding proteins
  • Familiarity with an affinity selection method such as phage display
  • Tissue culture skills
  • Experience with sequence analysis for characterization of gene editing outcomes
