Assistant Professor of 3D Animation

Dakota State University (DSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of 3D Animation, effective August 2021. We are seeking an energetic and experienced individual with contemporary knowledge of 3D animation, an understanding of animation principles and how they relate to 2D and 3D animation, as well as an understanding of figure drawing for animation, narrative storytelling and/or organic modeling. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to mentor students will be paramount to the position.

Applicants should have experience using innovative teaching strategies and teaching with technology as well as the ability to engage in critical conversations with students regarding their work. A keen understanding of commercial, independent and/or experimental animation along with an understanding of animation and story for games would be an asset to the position. The preferred candidate should be able to weave together concepts from sound design and graphic design into their curriculum. Teaching responsibilities include a combination of beginning, intermediate and advanced 3D animation and modeling courses. Course topics may include concepts of organic modeling (high and low poly), UV Mapping, Skinning, Rigging and Animation using contemporary software. In addition to teaching assignments, other duties include student advising, engagement in research and/or creative work, and service to the program, college, and/or university.

DSU’s Digital Arts and Design department confers a Bachelor of Science in Digital Arts and Design (DAD). Students choose one of three specializations: Computer Graphics, Digital Sound Design, or Production Animation. Ten full-time faculty members teach foundation through upper division undergraduate digital design courses.

DSU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and, to support its institutional accreditation, the university emphasizes continuous quality improvement in its institutional decision-making process.

Minimum Qualifications:
• An MFA in Animation or related field or relevant industry experience;
• Ability to teach topics in 3D animation;
• Communication and interpersonal skills to mentor students both creatively and technically.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated professional accomplishment and/or scholarly research;
• Experience as a Game Artist/Animator/Modeler in AAA/Indie Game Development or relevant experience in the Animation and Visual Effects industries.
