Assistant Professor-Percussion

Job description: The College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Music at The University of Texas at El Paso invite applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Percussion. This is a 9-month, tenure track, full time faculty position, whose primary responsibility will be to oversee the Percussion Area including teaching applied percussion, drum line, and steel pan with secondary emphasis on non-western drumming including Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Caribbean/Steel Pan.

Job responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Teaching Applied Percussion
  • Lead Percussion Ensembles with an emphasis in non-western drumming
  • Serve as lead recruiter for the UTEP Percussion Studio
  • Supporting all recruiting efforts of the Department of Music
  • Develop and expand outreach opportunities in the regional K-12 school system to further nurture the musical talent of El Paso students while recruiting students to attend UTEP
  • Work with the Department of Music, and specifically the Winds and Percussion Area, in its mission to instill postsecondary educational aspirations in youth, increase resources for college readiness in high schools, and improve access to higher education for all students in the greater El Paso borderland region
  • Identify and actively participate in all events and program where the visibility of UTEP performing ensembles can be amplified
  • Maintain a high profile as a performer and clinician through regional, state, national, and international venues, conferences, and guest performing activities. 

Appointment Date:  Fall 2021

Required qualifications:  DMA or Master’s degree with significant and substantial performing experience required. The successful candidate will have documented experience and a record of success in the areas of percussion performance and pedagogy. In addition, proven success in diverse areas of percussion that include, but not limited to drum line and non-western drumming. Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills are also essential.
