President

St. Lawrence University

Canton, New York

The Board of Trustees of St. Lawrence University invites nominations and applications for the position of president. St. Lawrence has a long history of creating a transformational educational experience that invites personal exploration and intellectual discovery along the St. Lawrence River in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The 19th president will be charged with leading the University through an unprecedented time in higher education, serving as an advocate for the value of a modern liberal arts education, ensuring fiscal health and sustainability, and leveraging St. Lawrence’s strong foundation and passionate community to forge a bold vision for its future. St. Lawrence seeks a president who will embrace its liberal arts tradition; proud record of innovation in teaching; picturesque location and sense of place in the North Country; global reach and local commitment; and community of enterprising students, talented faculty, dedicated staff, loyal alumni, and committed trustees.

St. Lawrence is a nationally recognized, independent, private, non-denominational, predominantly undergraduate university serving 2,400 students and is the oldest continuously coeducational institution of higher learning in New York State. The University has a long record of delivering highly personalized and meaningful college experiences for motivated students from all backgrounds, especially those from rural upstate New York, exposing them to new opportunities; developing a holistic sense of self; and providing a path toward independence, personal and professional resilience and nimbleness, preparation for global citizenship, and intellectual breadth. The powerful student experience produces impactful and fiercely committed alumni and contributes to a strong sense of community for Laurentians both on campus and beyond.

A St. Lawrence education combines traditional liberal arts curricula with some more professionally oriented courses of study, including masters-level programming in education and undergraduate programs in business in the liberal arts and public health, among others. St. Lawrence is known nationally among liberal arts peers for its strength in international programs, focus on research-based and experiential learning, and educational approach that bridges students’ academic lives and their co-curricular activities to prepare them to be thoughtful, productive global citizens. To this end, St. Lawrence offers a number of community-based learning courses, as well as collaborative living and learning environments, beginning with the residential First-Year Program in which all students participate.

Despite real external challenges, the next president stands to inherit a well-run and well-positioned university, which has enjoyed stable and capable leadership going back decades. The St. Lawrence community is aware of its financial pressures and has already begun the work of finding efficiencies, innovating within the curricula, and marketing its value proposition to today’s student, all while continuing a tradition of transformational learning experiences. In the Board of Trustees, the president will find key strategic partners who are deeply committed, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. The next president, in collaboration with the full range of college stakeholders, will provide the vision and administrative leadership to see St. Lawrence not just through but beyond these unprecedented times. The president must be a good financial steward of the University, support curriculum work connecting the classroom experience to career outcomes, leverage technology in and out of the classroom, facilitate and continue administrative reorganization to ensure optimal functionality, foster diversity and inclusion, and be an accessible and active member of the St. Lawrence and Canton communities.
