Assistant Director Landscape services

Lead FOD Landscape Services organization. Direct responsibilities include management of all aspects of grounds, roads and sidewalk maintenance and for approximately 1,350 acres, 40 miles of streets and roads, 130 miles of sidewalks, and snow and ice control, numerous hardscape installations and outdoor furniture, including Wexner Medical Center properties in the greater Columbus geographic area. Responsible for setting forth and implementing strategy for the Landscape department of 60+ staff members, including bargaining unit employees. Works closely with Superintendents, Planner and University Landscape Architect to develop a vision, strategies, long term and short-term departmental goals for campus softscapes and hardscapes. Lead efforts to make Landscape a workplace of choice. Build and maintain partnerships with key stake holders and customers; develop a national reputation as a leader in sustainable best practices and service delivery. Manage performance for delivery of customer centric, consistent high quality, efficient, reliable, cost-effective, sustainable services. Make data driven decisions, work closely with Performance Excellence team to manage and analyze data to ensure appropriate APPA levels of service and departmental performance; determine needed operating funds, personnel and equipment; advocate for and assist with procurement of necessary resources. Work with University communications to disseminate timely and accurate information as needed; Work with Landscape planner to develop and track financial and labor estimates for service level agreements; develop plans for future needs of the University; oversee quality control program for contracted services and repairs; set and implement goals in support of larger university sustainability goals; Assist with storm water management; provide opportunities for professional development of landscape services leadership team including career path guidance and succession planning. Structure needs assessment programs for training needs and manage training program in order to remain current and maintain proficiency with an emphasis on safety. Develop, administer and manage annual budget in excess of $5M in collaboration with shop superintendents and Planner; Provide expert review and inform university building design standards; Serve as advisor and technical specialist for new construction acceptance. Act as consultant in the design and plan review of campus landscape projects.

 

Qualifications:

A minimum of 10 years’ experience leading a large roads and grounds maintenance organization (university, city, parks, museums, large corporate campuses, commercial sector, entertainment sector etc.) required; experience with snow related operations, hardscape, masonry, catch basin and road repair, familiar with storm drains, sewers, and equipment used in hardscape and landscape repair required; experience with facilities management systems desired; significant experience analyzing cost of operations, monitoring expenditures and recommending improvements desired; experience dealing with the public and government agencies related to roads and grounds issues. Needs to have knowledge of tree crew operations and safety requirements.
