Assistant Professor-Computer Science

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computer Science (CS) starting in fall 2021. We invite applicants from all areas of CS with preference to those with demonstrated expertise in Artificial Intelligence and/or Engineering Education. Candidates are expected to have a record of high-quality scholarship and should be able to demonstrate the potential for excellence in both research and teaching in Computer Science. The department values both interdisciplinary research and relevant research or work experience in industry or government.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must hold an earned doctorate in Computer Science, Engineering Education or a closely related field by the time they are hired, and demonstrate excellence in both research and teaching with a focus in Computer Science. All candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills, have the ability to establish an active research program, and be motivated to support the student-oriented culture of the department and the university.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE AND DEPARTMENT: UTEP’s CS department resides in the College of Engineering, along with six other academic departments including Engineering Education and Leadership. Student research is key to the College of Engineering experience, as well as interdisciplinary and industry training opportunities. Our highly-trained graduates are heavily recruited by the industry's leading companies and top government agencies. The college is consistently ranked among the top schools in the continental U.S. in awarding bachelor degrees to Hispanics.

The CS undergraduate program has been accredited by ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission since 1986. The CS faculty ( has an internationally distinguished record of research and national leadership in professional organizations. The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, as well as M.S. degrees in Software Engineering and Data and Information Sciences. The undergraduate program has concentrations in software engineering, secure cyber-systems, and data analytics. In addition, the M.S. in Software engineering offers a concentration in secure cyber-systems. UTEP is an NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations and Cyber Defense, and it leads the NSF-supported INCLUDES Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI), a national network of Hispanic-Serving Institutions and organizations from the public and private sectors committed to Hispanic and female student recruitment, retention, and advancement in computing.

For sports fans, the UTEP Miners offer exciting Division I-A college athletics at several campus venues: Sun Bowl Stadium, the Don Haskins Center, Kidd Field, University Field, and the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. Southwest University Park, located a mile away in lively downtown El Paso, is home to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and the El Paso Locomotive, a professional soccer team founded in 2019.

SALARY:  Based upon experience.
