Associate/Full Professor-Cancer Biology
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites nominations and applications for an Associate/Full Professor faculty position in Cancer Research in the Department of Biological Sciences (tenure-track/tenured), while outstanding Assistant Professors with a strong research program and funding may be considered. The primary area of research interest should focus on cancer biology with a preferred emphasis on cancers that disproportionately affect underrepresented populations. The successful candidate will be a talented faculty member who will collaborate in teams to cultivate and embrace excellence in teaching, research, and service in a predominantly Mexican-American community. Preference will be given to candidates whose research analyzes cancer samples and patient data to address health disparities in the majority Hispanic population within our border region. The successful candidate is expected to establish an extramurally funded research program; to teach and mentor undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students and be a member of the Border Biomedical Research Center (BBRC). The Department of Biological Sciences offers two Ph.D. tracks (Bioscience and Ecology/Evolution) and has over 100 graduate students and over 2000 majors. The department boasts multiple state-of-the-art core facilities with full-time staff and BSL3/ABSL3 and small-animal (rodent) facilities. The core facilities include those focused on mass spectrometry, genomics, tissue culture and high-throughput drug screening, confocal microscopy, bioinformatics and biostatistics. Biological sciences faculty maintain strong collaborative and programmatic ties with several other departments, including Psychology, Pharmacy, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science. Candidates’ research should have the potential for strong extramural funding. This position represents a unique opportunity for an outstanding individual to be a part of shaping/delivering an integrated curriculum and advancing scholarship in cancer research at UTEP, a research-intensive university. Appointment is commensurate with the applicant’s history of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and leadership. The start-up package is negotiable, and the anticipated appointment date is Fall 2021.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The recruited faculty member will: (1) work to implement and deliver a cancer-based curriculum using innovative teaching models that connect science to practice; (2) contribute to the department’s curriculum accreditation; (3) engage and mentor a culturally diverse undergraduate and graduate student body in research experiences; (4) communicate well across diverse faculty disciplines and student populations; (5) advance teaching and research skills through faculty development opportunities; (6) provide leadership through university, professional, scientific and/or community service; (7) demonstrate scholarly activity as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals; (8) develop and maintain a sustainable and extramurally-funded research program; (9) develop collaborations with established graduate programs at UTEP and neighboring institutions; and (10) mentor junior faculty members (for the Associate Professor rank).

Southwest University Park, located a mile away in lively downtown El Paso, is home to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and the El Paso Locomotive, a professional soccer team founded in 2019.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a doctoral degree in cancer biology or a related field from an accredited institution, with documented evidence of:
- Success in collaborative scholarship, external funding, and/or publications;
- Evidence of successful teaching in the pharmaceutical sciences or related fields in a higher education institution;
- Ability to work effectively as a team with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds;
- Involvement of students in research and/or publication opportunities;
- Service in their discipline/profession and at the university; and
- Mentoring of junior faculty (for the Associate/Full Professor rank).
Minimum qualifications for appointment at the rank of associate professor include an extensive and continuing body of research published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Applicants eligible for the associate/full professor rank may be considered for leadership opportunities that are available or might become available within the College of Science.
Preference will be given to candidates at the Associate and Full Professor level but Assistant Professors positions will also be considered depending on the applicant pool. All applicants should have completed postdoctoral research, have a cancer-training background, and/or have experience in a U.S.-accredited school/college.
