The Assistant General Counsel's (AGC) purpose is to provide legal advice to academic and administrative offices across campus; review, draft, and negotiate university contracts; and draft legal documents and memoranda of law. The AGC also assists with matters of compliance with state and federal law; drafts, reviews, and revises university policies and conducts trainings on those polices; and oversees grievance proceedings. The AGC will report to the General Counsel.
The Assistant General Counsel (AGC) reports directly to the General Counsel. The AGC will provide legal advice in a fast-paced environment to a variety of academic and administrative offices across campus. The AGC will review, draft and negotiate university contracts; research legal issues; draft legal documents and memoranda of law for attorney use; provide support in responding to discovery requests and investigations by regulatory agencies; assist in coordination of compliance with various state and federal laws and regulations; develop special studies on a variety of legal issues and policy matters; draft, review, and revise university policies and regulations; handle grievance proceedings; and, as needed, conduct training for various campus constituencies on university policies and regulations and matters that may expose the university to legal vulnerability.
This position is Mandatory Personnel: Employees whose presence has been determined to be mandatory to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements: JD from an accredited law school and admission to the North Carolina State Bar (or must become barred within one year of employment); one year of relevant legal experience; excellent interpersonal, organizational, writing, research, and advocacy skills; demonstrated leadership experience.
Management Preference: Experience in contract review, drafting, and modification; knowledge of education law; knowledge of laws regulating activities of agencies of the State of North Carolina.
License: Admission NC State Bar (or within one year of employment)
