Dept Marketing Statement
The Division of Student Affairs and Success provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs and activities across departments, divisions, colleges, and administrative units. The Student Affairs and Success Division includes Career Success, the Student Success Centers (formerly Retention Services), Dean of Students, Student Conduct, and Student Health, which all provide direct services and resources to students, and the Student Success Equity Research Center (SSERC), which provides data, research, and evaluation support for the campus and manages the adviser case management, early alert, and predictive analytics systems that are part of the student success initiatives.

The Mission of UCSC Career Success is to prepare students for what they want to do with their lives by developing relevant career skills.  Career Success envisions that Banana Slugs change the world, wherever they are, however they can.

Position Summary

Involves planning, developing, and implementing programs, activities, counseling, and advising focused on students' career development. Works with students, alumni, and / or potential employers.

Manages a large, complex career services program, or several small career services programs. Develops the short and long term organizational goals of the organization. Determines and evaluates department activities, including the scope and nature of services. Oversees changes to policies. Directs subordinate supervisors and / or managers. Represents the career programs to the organization and external organizations.

Job Duties
25% - Strategy

Direct the implementation of strategy, goals, and activities of the Career Success Team.

Refine the strategic vision for Career Success and build high-level partnerships with stakeholders, including students, faculty, alumni and employers.  Drive innovation in creating scalable solutions that embed career success throughout the institution. 


25% - Management and Supervision

Mentor and cast the vision for all career staff within the career center and develop measurable outcomes for all staff.

Oversee and manage the budget and fiscal needs of the organization, including partnering to generate revenue. 

Provide direction to subordinate managers and / or supervisors.

Make decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.

Responsible for developing and implementing budgets for managed functions. 

Has fiscal / budget responsibility and may be responsible for generating revenue.

Oversee analysis and policy development for issues and processes of career services program(s).


20% - Internal Engagement

Develop and sustain strong networks across campus with all relevant co-curricular units.  

Develop and foster strong networks with other academic and administrative units, including: Undergraduate Education, Graduate Division, Extension, University Relations, and all of the academic divisions and departments.


30% - Stakeholder Engagement

Cultivate and expand employer partnerships that provide opportunities for all students and majors.  

Implement a strategy to engage with regional, national, and global employer partners.

Create communications strategies that consistently showcase the myriad pathways to career success for students, prospective families, alumni, employers, and other key stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

 

 

  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice, workshop and program design.
  • Advanced knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.
  • Strong ability to design and modify computer applications and to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, organizational skills, leadership skills, and program development skills.
  • Strong ability to work with people from diverse cultures and collaborate with multiple and diverse constituents to accomplish goals.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience within student affairs, career education and/or workforce development.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience leading teams, which includes supervision of professional staff.
  • Experience with effective change management.
  • Proven experience engaging with institutional leadership.
