Art and Art History – Assistant Professor of Studio Art in Drawing

Description

The Department of Art & Art History invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Studio Art in Drawing to begin in August 2021. We are a NASAD accredited, BA granting, fine arts program in the context of a liberal arts college.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic artist with an active exhibition record whose studio practice is demonstrably based in drawing, with the ability to teach traditional drawing materials and techniques as well as the potential to teach new genres that overlap or intersect with drawing. These genres might include one or more of the following areas: performative drawing, video/film, mixed media, printmaking, painting, large- and small-scale installation, social practice, motion graphics, sound art, digital practices or other hybrid and emerging art forms.

Embracing interdisciplinary explorations and promoting student excellence within a liberal arts context is at the core of the department's mission. Familiarity or willingness to learn basic online platforms is required of all faculty.

Candidates will demonstrate ongoing engagement with critical theory and methodologies as well as a global perspective that embraces diversity and inclusion through their studio practice, teaching or service.

The department places a high value on administrative vision and collaborative leadership. Experience with, or aptitude for, campus wide service and governance will be expected as the candidate progresses in the tenure track path and beyond.

In addition to drawing courses, the teaching load may include interdisciplinary capstone courses such as the department's studio/seminars for all senior majors (such as ART 365 or 350, which the faculty teaches on a rotating basis https://hope.edu/catalog/current/art/index.html#tabs-3), or a first year or senior seminar. (https://hope.edu/academics/general-education/) Participation in department-wide critiques, portfolios reviews and student advising is required of all department faculty.

The department and college prioritize the creative research of pre-tenure faculty through individual and collaborative summer grants. The Assistant Professor of Art would be eligible for tenure after a probationary period (a standard six-year period). A unique and attractive draw of this position is that the faculty member would be eligible for the Howard R. and Margaret E. Sluyter Endowed Professorship in Art & Design after the probationary period.

This position is currently pending final financial approval.
