Associate or Full Professor - Public Policy

The Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston (UH) seeks to hire a tenure track (open rank) faculty member for Fall 2020 in a core area of Public Policy such as education, energy and the environment, health, housing, immigration, institutional, transportation policy, or political economy and policymaking. We welcome a broad range of applicants but are particularly interested in those who are willing to engage in multidisciplinary research.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a record of scholarly productivity, commitment to develop and sustain a nationally competitive program of research with implications for public policy, and capability and commitment to contribute to undergraduate and graduate programs. The Hobby School emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration and affiliation. Individuals with cross-cutting disciplinary and/or methodological interests are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those with interests in working with diverse populations. Preference will be given to candidates with strong formal and methodological skill sets in areas including but not limited to data visualization, decision algorithms, GIS, natural language parsing, network analysis, small area models, survey research methods, laboratory and/or field experiments, and probabilistic forecasts.

With over 45,000 students on the main campus and one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse public universities in the nation, UH (www.uh.edu) is a Carnegie-Designated Tier One Public Research University. The Hobby School was recently created by the UH system and thus offers incoming faculty the opportunity to join existing faculty in building and shaping the direction and culture of the school. The Hobby School emphasizes advanced social science methodology and political philosophy in its teaching, training, and research.

The Hobby School is well-positioned for evidence-based research in Houston, the nation’s fourth (soon to be third) most populous American city. Houston itself is a laboratory for the future, as it reflects what is happening in the United States in terms of demographic and economic trends. Moreover, Houston (www.houston.org) boasts a high quality of life with the following attributes: (a) a growing economy, including oil & gas, the Johnson Space Center, and the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical center, (b) rich traditions in music, theatre, art, and sports, (c) a diverse population, (d) award-winning restaurants reflective of many cultures, and (e) relatively low cost/affordability among large cities.
