The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students (AVC/DOS). This is a tremendous opportunity for a proven Student Affairs leader with the skills and talent to manage and inspire essential Student Affairs departments and dedicated staff while supporting the success of the diverse student body, individually and collectively. As a senior advisor to the Vice Chancellor and a key staff member in the Division of Student Affairs, the Associate Vice Chancellor plays a significant role in strategic planning, personnel and budget management, student engagement, and policy development. As the individual responsible for ensuring the needs of students are addressed during times of joy and of crisis, the Dean of Students must be able to genuinely connect and engage with students and to advise and mentor other staff as they do the same. The University is looking for a professional who can manage both roles. The Division of Student Affairs shares a deep commitment to enhancing opportunities for students to grow and flourish, and the AVC/DOS is an essential leader for those initiatives. This leadership role is particularly positioned to help implement the campus' ambitious strategic plan and will serve as a key advocate in the upcoming fundraising campaign.

The Position

The Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students provides leadership for a large portfolio focusing on the development and experiences of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. As a visible and informed advocate for students, the AVC/DOS will develop and share a vision for responding to and anticipating the needs and expectations of the high-achieving, dedicated, and active student-scholars of Berkeley. The AVC/DOS will: possess excellent collaborative skills; be expected to create outstanding relationships across the University; lead a multidimensional team within the Dean of Students portfolio; and have the experience to envision the possibilities for enhancing key auxiliary services and programs. The professional in this key position must be able to navigate this complex institution with finesse, confidence, transparency, and humility. To be successful, it is important that the AVC/DOS demonstrate a commitment to social justice, the desire to enrich the experience and engagement of students, and the ability to build trust while dealing with critical issues and challenges on campus. Essential for candidates to understand are the need for confidence in the visible role of AVC/DOS and to value the nuance required in advocating for students and staff while supporting the mission, history and values of the University.

As a student-centered thought leader and partner to others in the Student Affairs Division, the AVC/DOS will enhance responsive connections with constituent groups, understand the expectations of students and families, advocate for underrepresented students, and build alliances both on and off campus. The AVC/DOS will provide leadership for dedicated staff with a strong commitment to advancing departmental and divisional priorities. Main Responsibilities

 

 

 

  • Provide leadership and supervision to the five Associate Deans and an Executive Assistant; review, evaluate, guide, and advocate for the development of programs and services in each department. The AVC/DOS, through the direct reports, is responsible for:

    o Center for Student Conduct
    o Center for Support and Intervention
    o Student Legal Services
    o Residential Life
    o Recreational Sports
    o LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Advising, and Development) Center
    o New Student Services
    o Student Environmental Resource Center
    o ASUC Student Union
    o Public Service Center
    o Career Center
     
  • Serve as a senior advisor to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs; meet monthly with the Chancellor and the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) President
  • Serve as an advocate for students and their needs and as the lead voice on campus life matters; respond to emergency and crisis situations that affect students and represent the University to internal and external constituencies, including the media and the local community
  • Coordinate response and referrals for students, parents/families, and other campus stakeholders dealing with health and human service issues, including student injuries or deaths, psychological concerns, and related issues
  • Ensure that the vision and focus of student and campus life is student-centered and appreciative of the life of the mind
  • Monitor policy development and application in each of the overseen departments; evaluate and discuss with University administration any policy concerns revealed by direct reports, particularly those with broad institution implications and/or relating to students
  • Manage a complex budget of approximately $25M funded by multiple sources; lead efforts for program and staff funding support and fundraising initiatives
  • Serve as a member of the Protest Response Team and be comfortable in managing student activism
  • Participate on campus committees impacting student-related policies, services, or programs, including the Chancellor's Committee on Student Mental Health and the Behavioral Risk Team (BRT)
  • Participate in research relevant to student development, student mental health, and student affairs; keep abreast of current literature and developments in the field of student affairs

    Key Qualifications
     
  • Master's degree in a related area such Counseling or Education with an emphasis in Student Affairs and Higher Education Administration; Doctorate preferred
  • Ten or more years of experience in Student Affairs/Services demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility
  • Experience supervising a multi-departmental portfolio that demonstrates effective personnel management, negotiation, public speaking, and media relations skills
  • Demonstrate a strong student-centered philosophy supported by an understanding of student development theory and its applications
  • Successful analysis of a wide range of student service issues including synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data; demonstrate superior judgement in ability to balance numerous demands, evaluate competing priorities, and adjust planning as needed
  • Excellent cultural competency and cultural humility; knowledge of campus climate and multicultural issues
  • Outstanding communication skills, including writing clearly and concisely and presenting publicly to significant audiences, and the ability to interact comfortably with a wide range of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Possess astute political acumen regarding sensitive and highly visible issues
  • Experience leading and creating cross-campus partnerships and collaborations
  • Capacity to research and identify current issues in higher education both locally and nationally; awareness and insight into emerging issues (basic needs, mental health, students in recovery) and ability to state a case institutional support and action
  • Ability and skill in managing a multi-fund budget
  • Serve as an advocate for student and staff wellbeing
