An invitation to apply for the position of

Dean, College of Humanities and Fine Arts

Amherst, Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) seeks an inspiring and dynamic academic leader to serve as the next Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts (HFA). This is an opportunity to lead a major academic unit with a critical role at the University, and to join an ambitious R1 public university that aims to be among the top 20 in the nation.

One of 11 schools and colleges at UMass Amherst, HFA encompasses 14 academic departments: Architecture; Art; Classics; English; History; History of Art and Architecture; Judaic and Near Eastern Studies; Languages, Literatures and Cultures; Linguistics; Music and Dance; Philosophy; Theater; the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies; and Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies. The College's intellectual range and interdisciplinary thrust are reflected in its 12 research centers, institutes and programs, which draw on core HFA faculty as well as faculty in other UMass Amherst colleges—and at other institutions. Also part of the College is the award-winning Writing Program, which serves nearly 95 percent of the University's undergraduate population. The College has over 300 full-time faculty, 2,400 undergraduate students, and 600 graduate students.

The largest public university in New England and the flagship of the University of Massachusetts system, UMass Amherst has nearly 1,500 full-time tenure and non-tenure track faculty. It serves over 23,500 undergraduates (from 78 countries and every state in the union) and over 7,000 graduate students. Total research and development expenditures were $220 million in 2017, approximately one-third of the $670 million in research and development expenditures across the University of Massachusetts system. Three years removed from a record-breaking capital campaign, UMass Amherst has undertaken over $2 billion (with public and private support) in construction and renovations, adding approximately 3 million gross square feet of facilities in the past 15 years.

The next Dean will join the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at a moment that calls for creative, imaginative, and bold leadership. The University is in the midst of a strategic plan, which sets forth goals for student success; collaborations and partnerships at regional, national, and international levels; the pursuit and application of knowledge for the betterment of society; and the strengthening of a community of diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect. These strategic pillars could not be more relevant for a unit that is focused on human culture, experience, and expression. The Dean will work with colleagues within the College and across the University to develop programs and offerings that are exciting and relevant, and that prepare students for lives of personal and professional fulfillment and success.
