Dean of the Law School

Columbus, OH

Capital University seeks a bold, visionary, and collaborative leader to serve as Dean of the Law School. Located in the dynamic city of Columbus, the Law School offers the next Dean the opportunity to lead and empower a committed faculty to define and broadcast its distinctive history and strengths, and to chart an exciting path forward that celebrates the School’s founding as a “YMCA law school.” The next Dean will also be tasked to identify new ways and means to ensure student success and financial viability through innovative programs and empowering relationships.

The Law School serves as an urban entry-point for the broader community into Capital University and plays a vital role in the city of Columbus and the region, with the vast majority of its alumni practicing law in a 50-mile radius. Its founding impulse--to provide access to a high- quality legal education that prepares practice-ready lawyers and launches them into successful legal careers--still resonates today. The faculty and staff continue to embrace that mission and dedicate themselves to innovative teaching methods and to supporting the success of a diverse student body. The Law School’s mission and focus on educating practice-ready lawyers has been a differentiator in the legal education market. Like many law schools, Capital Law has faced challenges in enrollment in some of their long-time programs. However, with the right leadership and forward-thinking vision, Capital Law is primed to leverage the strengths of its founding mission, faculty, staff, students, and the dynamism of a city on the rise.

The Dean will be an engaged leader who embraces innovative thinking, fosters a sense of community, and optimizes Capital Law’s location, tradition, and surrounding resources. The ideal candidate will bring a deep knowledge of ABA accreditation processes and standards, a flair for building relationships with potential donors, and a track record of building innovative programs and partnering with community leaders. The Dean will work across the University to establish synergies with other programs and individuals to further strengthen the Law School. The overarching opportunity for the next Dean is working with all stakeholders at the Law School to develop a distinctive profile for Capital Law that leverages the vitality and growth of Columbus and the School’s foundational mission of access and producing practice-ready lawyers.
