Rice University seeks an inspiring and dynamic leader to serve as the next Dean of Rice Architecture. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is the chief educational and executive officer of Rice Architecture and a member of the Deans’ Council. The Dean will join a cohort who will shape the future direction of Rice University and define its culture for the foreseeable future. The Dean will work closely with faculty, staff, and university administrators in articulating priorities, opportunities, and ambitions; provide intellectual and programmatic engagement; and implement creative, collaborative and innovative strategies to further strengthen the reputation of Rice Architecture and Rice University.

Rice University is an independent, coeducational, nonsectarian, private, first-tier research university dedicated to rigorous undergraduate and graduate education, research, and professional training in selected disciplines. Over 860 faculty are devoted to the instruction and training of approximately 4,000 undergraduate students and 3,200 graduate and professional students. In the 2020 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s rankings of national universities, the University is 17th overall, and 8th for undergraduate education. The University is centrally located in Houston, Texas, near the Texas Medical Center, the city’s Museum District, and the downtown financial and cultural districts.

Recognized as one of the nation’s top architecture programs, Rice Architecture enrolls approximately 200 students in undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture. The university seeks a Dean that will define strategic priorities that leverage the strengths of the School and expand in new directions. The Dean will have the latitude and support to enhance teaching and research within, collaborate with other units on campus, and further develop a diverse, cohesive, and high-performing community. Qualifications for this position include a professional or advanced degree in architecture or related discipline as well as a distinguished record of research, creative work, and/or significant professional activity appropriate for appointment as full professor with tenure. The Dean will have an energetic and collaborative leadership style that inspires faculty, staff and students to develop a shared vision for the future.
