TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION IN KINESIOLOGY

The Kinesiology and Health Promotion (KHP) Department in the College of Science at California State Polytechnic University Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year. Candidates with a specialization in movement disability are especially encouraged to apply.

The Position:  The faculty member will teach discipline specific undergraduate and graduate lecture courses and labs. These areas include: Adapted Physical Education, Motor Behavior, Motor Control, Dimensions of Aging, and Clinical Rehabilitation/Rehabilitation Sciences. They will be expected to develop courses within any of the areas listed above relevant to their expertise. The position requires excellence in teaching, professional and scholarly achievements, and a commitment to university and community service. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to mentor undergraduate and graduate students, supervise senior projects and internships, direct graduate theses and projects and serve on thesis and project committees. The candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a scholarly research program that will facilitate the acquisition of internal and external funding and enhance graduate student recruitment. Additionally, there will be an emphasis on increasing community networking and collaboration with the on-campus Motor Development Clinic. The candidate is also expected to be active in professional societies and serve on department, college, and university committees.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the excellence of the academic community through teaching, research, service, and have experience working in an inclusive environment. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Hold a Doctorate in Kinesiology, or a closely related field, from an accredited institution by the start date of the appointment
  • Demonstrate potential to be effective in college teaching related to movement disability
  • Demonstrate achievements in scholarly research in movement disability/disability populations.
  • Demonstrate effective written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional training in experiential learning
  • Potential to obtain internal or external funding to support teaching, research, and/or service

The College:  The College of Science is one of eight academic colleges on campus and hosts over 4,300 students. The College offers 15 undergraduate degree programs across seven academic departments including Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geological Sciences, Kinesiology & Health Promotion, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy. The Department: The Kinesiology and Health Promotion Department consists of 11 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 20+ part-time instructors who teach in all aspects of the department’s programs. The Department offers a B.S. degree in Kinesiology and serves more than 600 majors distributed in two options (General, with emphases in exercise science, health promotion, or socio-cultural, and Pedagogical Kinesiology). The Department also offers an M.S. degree in Kinesiology. Emphases in the graduate program include Exercise Physiology, Adapted Physical Education, and Curriculum and Instruction. The Department supports laboratories in Biomechanics, Human Performance, Exercise Physiology, Mind and Heart Research, Psychophysiology, as well as an Adapted Physical Education clinic (Motor Development Clinic).  The Exercise Science Teaching Laboratory includes a body composition analysis equipment (DXA, BodPod, InBody BIA), multiple cycle ergometers, treadmills, metabolic carts, electromyography and electrocardiography equipment, isokinetic dynamometer, and other equipment used in teaching and research. Opportunities exist for cooperative research with faculty in the Colleges of Science, Engineering and Agriculture.

The Kinesiology and Health Promotion faculty have expertise in pedagogy, children with a disability, health promotion, stress management, cultural studies of sport and exercise, biomechanics, and exercise physiology. The faculty’s research includes motor development, balance, disability impact on motor performances, fundamental motor skills, pedagogical interventions, bone health in premenopausal women and young athletes, obesity in the adolescent and young population, exercise metabolism, sports nutrition, human performance, physical activity interventions, fitness technologies, and functional and molecular aspects of skeletal muscle physiology. The department is one of seven academic units in the College of Science and offers one of the six graduate programs in the College.
