Assistant Professor of Music (Orchestral and Instrumental Studies)

The Binghamton University (State University of New York) Department of Music invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music (Orchestral and Instrumental Studies) position.  The successful candidate will serve as director of the orchestral program and conductor of the University orchestra. The Department of Music offers B.A. and B. Mus degrees, as well as a M.M. degree with concentrations in opera/voice, instrumental performance, composition, music history and conducting.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Responsibilities:
•Serve as director of the orchestra program and conductor of the University orchestra
•Oversee the Department of Music instrumental program
•Collaborate with the Department of Music composition and opera programs
•Supervise graduate students in conducting and instrumental performance
•Offer additional academic courses as needed, which may include Music Theory, Composition, Orchestration, or Conducting
•Engage actively in on-campus and off-campus recruiting

Required Qualifications:
•Masters or Doctoral degree in Instrumental/Orchestral Conducting
•Experience conducting orchestras at the university level
•Performance record of a broad repertoire (full orchestra, new music, opera, chamber ensembles, solo concerti and arias, musical theater, works for choir and orchestra) from a range of musical eras
•Demonstrated experience in new-music collaboration and programming

Preferred Qualifications:
•Doctoral degree in Instrumental/Orchestral Conducting
•Experience teaching academic music courses as instructor of record
•Experience supervising graduate students in Orchestral Conducting
•Experience in building and maintaining an orchestral program in a high-performing liberal arts university setting
•Entrepreneurial experience in ensemble and audience development
•Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration across the arts and/or humanities
