The Search

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) welcomes applications and nominations for the position of Radiation Safety Officer in the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in developing and implementing the radiation safety programs at VCU and VCU Health Systems. Serving as the chief radiation safety expert at the institution, the Radiation Safety Officer will provide leadership to a team of professionals dedicated to high customer service, safety and regulatory compliance. Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) will ensure and prioritize customer service, accuracy and consistency in the development and application of University and Health System policies. The Radiation Safety Officer will work collaboratively to unify the Office of Environmental Health and Safety under a common mission, while empowering and developing the staff of the Radiation Safety Office. The next RSO will modernize operations and business practice to implement best practices, and lead a strong emphasis on customer service through education, while ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies. The RSO will communicate and create value in radiation safety and EHS as a service to University research and clinical radiation operations in the health system.

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Physics, Physical Science, Engineering or a related field, and at least five years’ experience in radiation safety, including developing and/or implementing radiation safety programs in healthcare or research environments. Preference will be given to candidates who bring a Master’s or PhD degrees. The successful candidate will be an effective, collaborative leader who brings strong technical expertise, current knowledge of regulatory and best practices, and an emphasis on team work, process improvement, and education.
