ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR OF PIANO

The Texas Tech University J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts, in collaboration with the School of Music, is accepting applications for a tenure track faculty position as Eva Browning Artist-in-Residence, Associate Professor/Professor of Piano. This position is for an artist-teacher with national and international distinction who is committed to sustaining and enhancing the Texas Tech keyboard program and mentoring the next generation of keyboard performers, educators, and scholars enrolled in our comprehensive undergraduate and graduate keyboard programs. The successful candidate will begin service in this full-time position at the beginning of the 2020 fall semester.

Position Requirements: A terminal degree in piano (DMA, PhD, or equivalent), or commensurate professional experience. The ideal candidate will have an active performance career, bringing a superior knowledge of performance skills, outstanding performance ability, studio and master class teaching experience, and an active record of professional achievement that includes international, national, regional, community engagement and/or collaboration. Candidates will continue their professional research and creative activity that is relevant to the current and future practice of music: 

  • Working knowledge of current practice/pedagogy/theory in piano/keyboard technique, pedagogy, collaborative piano, recital and concerto literature, and with a vision towards future developments is essential.
  • A commitment to quality, student-centered education and working as a team member.
  • Strong evidence of the ability and desire to contribute through service: duties include, but are not limited to, recruiting, program-building, and commitment to extra-curricular activities of the department, college, and university, and the community.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students. The ability to form partnerships within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Desire and ability to partner with keyboard-area colleagues to expand departmental offerings in collaborative piano, piano pedagogy, and community-oriented programs. Familiarity with current and cutting-edge practice in keyboard performance and pedagogy. Achievement in preparing pianists for major competitions both national and international. Substantial teaching experience at the university level desired. Possessing strong language and writing skills, the ability to guide students through scholarly projects.

Position Description:

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate ability to teach undergraduate/graduate pianists and continue to engage in nationally/internationally recognized creative/professional practice and/or scholarship.
  • Maintain an active and vibrant professional performing career in concert and recital repertoire.
  • Promote their activity through performance and master classes.
  • Prepare students to actively enter and compete in international performances and major competitions.
  • Seek out and recruit the highest level of student pianists.
  • Supervise student preparation for performance recitals and pedagogical research projects on the undergraduate/graduate levels (e.g., degree recitals, master’s and doctoral documents, lecture recitals, and pedagogical presentations).
  • Embrace new forms of critically engaged disciplinary practice/scholarship in the evolving field of keyboard performance, have the ability to seek out opportunities to teach broadly across the curriculum, and envision new ways to expand beyond it.
  • As a collaborative departmental citizen, actively participate in departmental, college and university service, including committee work and academic support services in support of the School of Music, the College, and the University as a whole; recruitment of graduate and undergraduate students into the piano programs; program review (including implementation and assessment of outcomes); maintaining the keyboard area’s accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM); and student advising, supervision of student organizations, and participation in sponsored off-campus activities.
  • Work well with colleagues within and outside the School, particularly in building interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Where appropriate, demonstrate the potential to bring external funding to the School/College.
  • Be aware of and follow all university policies.

The Eva Browning Artist-in-Residence is an endowed component of this faculty position that provides a reduced teaching load. The select candidate of the endowment is required to perform on campus and to maintain an active professional performing career.

The School of Music is NASM accredited and offers the B.A. in Music, the B.M. in Music with concentrations in Music (leading toward teacher certification), Composition, Performance, and Theory, the M.M. in Music Education, the M.M. in Music with concentrations in Composition, Conducting, Jazz Performance, Music Theory, Musicology, Pedagogy, and Performance, the D.M.A. with tracks in Composition, Conducting, Performance, and Piano Pedagogy, the PhD in Fine Arts with concentrations in Arts Administration, Music Education, Musicology, and Music Theory, the Undergraduate Minor in Music, Undergraduate Certificates in Community Arts Entrepreneurship, Jazz Studies, and World Music, and Graduate Certificates in Early Music Performance Practice and Piano Pedagogy.

A faculty of 63 full-time professors serves approximately 380 undergraduate students and 220 students involved in graduate study. The School of Music has many prominent alumni, including nationally known Grammy award vocalists Susan Graham and Garrett Sorenson, and internationally acclaimed soprano Rebecca Nelsen, among others. Technical and administrative support includes a total of 20 staff positions. The University Library contains a wide array of music resources, including musical scores, recordings, videos, instructional media, and research spaces such as the Crossroads Recording Studio—a state-of-the-art professional recording facility with the ability to record album projects of all genres, jingles, voice overs, and just about any other type of recording project.
