Job Description:
The next Provost will oversee development of new programs and a $29 million capital building program, which includes a new student union, academic, and athletic facilities as part of implementing Maritime College's new strategic plan, "Charting a New Course." In addition, the College anticipates delivery of a new $300 million training ship in late 2022. As the chief academic officer, the Provost is also responsible for promoting a rich intellectual life, fostering student success, creating an active learning environment both in the classroom and beyond, and enhancing academic research, scholarship, creative activity and elevating the academic profile of the institution to support the strategic plan. This creative and visionary individual coordinates and sustains collaborative leadership in accomplishing the vision of SUNY Maritime College. The Provost reports directly to the President and provides executive leadership and supervision to all academic areas of the College, Student and Regimental Affairs, Admissions, Advisement, Records and the Stephen B. Luce Library. Additionally, the Provost is charged with promoting a collegial atmosphere and articulating the needs and aspirations of all disciplines to the President and the campus community. The role requires this individual to perform increasingly cross-functional and campus-wide duties to accomplish the strategic goals of the campus and meet appropriate measures of performance and effectiveness.  The successful candidate must be able to easily share the vision of the College and foster connection with external partners, including internationally, as the Provost plays a key role in articulating the College's message to all constituencies and the advancing of its unique mission.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs shall:

  • Provide leadership for all academic programs and works with the Deans and faculty of the Schools of Business, Science & Humanities, Engineering, and Maritime Education & Training to:
    • Facilitate appropriate program development
    • Ensure systematic review of programs to ensure quality and current course content
    • Formulate, maintain and implement a high-quality curriculum
  • Provide leadership in matters of academic and student policy and administration, and regularly advise the President on these matters
  • Coordinate and provide leadership to implementation of the College's strategic plan through the Planning, Budget and Assessment Committee
  • Coordinate with the School Deans and approve the hiring, support, development and evaluation of faculty, staff, and administrators of instructional programs and services
  • Coordinate with the School Deans and approve the assigning of courses and non-instructional assignments to full and part-time faculty
  • Encourage and support research, grant-writing, publishing and other scholarly activities of the faculty
  • Supervise the School Deans; the Academic Dean, the College's chief academic services officer; the Dean of Student Affairs, the College's chief student affairs officer; the Dean of Admissions, the College's chief enrollment management officer; the Commandant of Cadets/Dean of Leadership Development, the College's chief regimental and leadership officer; and the Director of the Stephen B. Luce Library.
  • Work with the Academic Council (Provost's Cabinet) and the Council of Deans to promote the effective interrelationship between instructional services, student affairs and academic initiatives; and to ensure that the college meets its enrollment management goals
  • Coordinate assessment and accreditation efforts, and the preparation of reports to various accrediting agencies
  • Work with the Master of the Training Ship, along with the Deck and Engine license faculty, on the preparations for the Summer Sea Term
  • Coordinate with the Vice President for Finance and Administration on budget matters, and in the effective and efficient use of and planning for facilities
  • Coordinate with the Academic Dean, School Deans and Department Chairs the preparation of the class schedule each semester; approves the final class schedule
  • Collaborate with the Academic Dean and Assistant to the Provost on the compilation of information for the published College Catalog and Faculty Handbook
  • Coordinate professional development activities for the College
  • Serve as the primary contact for the State University of New York and local, state and federal agencies in matters pertaining to academic affairs
  • Serve on the President's Cabinet and other committees as needed
  • Serves as ex-officio member of administratively appointed academic committees
  • Ensures communication with faculty by working closely with the Presiding Officer of the Faculty to promote quality and shared faculty governance
  • Perform other duties as delegated by the President

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Broad knowledge of the philosophy and mission of higher education
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and its application to sound academic management
  • Knowledge of enrollment management (admissions), leadership development and student affairs
  • Ability and skill in the design and application of methods for the evaluation of faculty and staff
  • Ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, complex ideas and recommendations
  • Ability to carry out the functions of leadership along a planned program of institutional direction
  • Ability to develop and administer a college budget; ability to establish and monitor fiscal accountability within the areas of responsibility
  • Strong commitment to shared governance and a collegial environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, and students as well as community groups and industry

Requirements:
 

Required Qualifications
The successful candidate should possess an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or equivalent field whose disciplines and experience align the College's mission. Appropriate teaching experience required. The candidate should demonstrate a minimum of 10 years of post-degree experience directly related to higher education or related field with largely equivalent experience. Strong leadership background and proven record of impact with progressive experience in senior level positions. Demonstrated successful experience in strategic planning, oversight and assessment of academic programs, enrollment management, fiscal management, resource allocation personnel supervision and effective collaboration with faculty and support of shared governance. Suitably qualified incumbents may be eligible for appointment as a tenured full professor

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated successful experience in student affairs
  • Familiarity with the State Maritime Academies and Merchant Marine licensure
  • Familiarity with personnel supervision in a unionized environment

Classification/Salary Range: The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is a Management Confidential unclassified position (calendar year appointment) which serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority is not represented for collective negotiations. Salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications and includes an outstanding benefits package (for more information please see the Management Confidential Benefit Summary).

Special Notes: Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
