The University of Delaware invites nominations and applications for the position of Inaugural Dean of the Graduate College and Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Education (Dean).

 

The Position

 

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is the chief representative and administrative officer of the College and has general administrative authority over College affairs. Among the Dean’s general responsibilities are to:

 

  • In collaboration with faculty, Deans, the Graduate Council, and other University constituencies, develop and implement an aligned and integrated vision for graduate and professional education in both face-to-face and online settings;
  • Elevate the stature and reputation of graduate education through strategic positioning and marketing of University programs;
  • Develop and provide comprehensive centralized student-support and professional development programs and services to all graduate students at the University;
  • Support graduate education and advocate for graduate programs to the University and community;
  • Support and expand interdisciplinary graduate and professional programs;
  • Garner resources in support of the Graduate College and Professional Education through fundraising and development;
  • Assemble and lead a team within the Graduate College and Professional Education to contribute to its vision and mission;
  • Administer and allocate the College’s budget;
  • Build a sense of community amongst graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty that transcends academic fields;
  • Facilitate the establishment of processes and procedures to assist across all graduate programs;
  • Lead in the coordination of marketing programs to prospective students; and
  • Identify and develop synergies between graduate education and research.

 

The Dean

 

Successful applicants must have the academic qualifications and achievements consistent with an appointment as a tenured full professor, including a strong record of scholarship and graduate mentoring.

 

In addition, it is preferred that Dean candidates have demonstrated:

 

  • A proven track record of successful, collaborative, and catalytic academic leadership working effectively with faculty, administrators, students, and staff;
  • Experience in achieving academic excellence including with inter-disciplinary programs;
  • A strong commitment to shared governance;
  • The skillset to bring teams together and promote interdisciplinary program development;
  • A strategic mindset and experience with fiscal planning and budgeting;
  • An understanding of the graduate and professional education landscape and a proven ability to develop, implement, and execute upon a vision;
  • Experience with online education at the graduate and professional education levels;
  • Familiarity with graduate and professional student and post-doctoral needs and involvement working with these individuals; and
  • A collaborative and collegial approach to facilitate the development of the Graduate College and professional education across campus.

The Search Committee invites nominations, applications (a letter of interest, comprehensive curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of five or more references), or expressions of interest to be submitted to the search firm assisting the University of Delaware (electronic submissions preferred). Confidential review of materials will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The Search Committee prefers that all nominations and applications be submitted to the search firm by December 10, 2019.
