Southeast Missouri State University is a comprehensive regional state university with five colleges, 11,000 students, and a faculty and staff of over 1,100.  Southeast, a moderately selective institution, offers baccalaureate, masters and specialist degrees, and participates in joint doctoral programs with the University of Missouri.  Cape Girardeau, a historic city overlooking the Mississippi River, is the hub of a thriving county with a population of approximately 78,000.  Serving a region of more than 500,000 people, it is the largest center for retail, medical, manufacturing, communications, and cultural activities between St. Louis and Memphis.

The Dean is the chief administrative officer and academic leader of the College of Education, Health and Human Studies and reports directly to the provost.  The college consists of seven departments: Child and Family Studies; Communication Disorders; Elementary, Early, and Special Education; Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Recreation; Leadership, Middle, and Secondary Education; Nursing; and Psychology and Counseling.  The 175 faculty and staff members in the college teach, supervise, and serve approximately 2,179 undergraduate majors and approximately 227 graduate students.  Graduate programs include 14 Master’s degrees, 3 Specialist’s degrees, and a collaborative doctoral degree with the University of Missouri-Columbia.  The college offers programs which integrate classroom study and field experience. The College also has 14 community based service learning centers providing assistance to individuals across the lifespan. Southeast is an Apple Distinguished School.  Accreditations are held with the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics; American Dietetic Association; American Speech-Language-Hearing Association/Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology; Association for Behavior Analysis International; Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education; Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education; Commission on Sports Management Accreditation; Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs; Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation; Council on Accreditation for Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions; Missouri State Board of Nursing; National Association for the Education of Young Children; National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education/National Association for Sport & Physical Education; National Council on Family Relations/Certified Family Life Educator.  More information about the College of Education, Health & Human Studies may be found at https://semo.edu/education-health/index.html.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates should submit a cover letter demonstrating how they meet the following required qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in an education, health and human studies that is represented in one of the academic departments in the college from a regionally accredited University
  • Record of accomplishment consistent with appointment as a tenured full professor in one of the departments in the college
  • Distinguished teaching experience, and a record of scholarly achievement
  • Demonstrated administrative or leadership ability in an academic setting with national accreditations
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of collegiality and shared governance
  • Evidence of the ability to maintain and strengthen ties with educational, social service, and health-related communities
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire external resources through fundraising, grants, and contracts
  • Evidence of a commitment to the recruitment, advancement, and retention of a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing and strategically using budgets
  • Strong background in advocacy for a variety of stake holders, including alumni, donors, students, faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multicultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
