The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a nationally-recognized leader in university outreach to serve as Dean and Director for the Division of Extension, a key component of the university’s historical commitment to ensuring that the many benefits of the university are shared with communities throughout the State of Wisconsin and beyond. The Division has been reorganized to meet emerging challenges more effectively, and also has returned to the UW-Madison after nearly 50 years as part of a separate unit within the University of Wisconsin System, both developments contributing to an environment rich in possibilities for innovative leadership and creative exploration. The Division of Extension reaches nearly one million people annually on issues including agriculture, community development, natural resources, family living, nutrition, youth development, and health and well-being, and constantly is seeking to develop new ways of connecting university research with community-based needs. The Dean will report to the Provost through the Vice Provost for Extension and Public Media, and will be responsible for providing creative, inspiring leadership to more than 700 faculty and staff located in 72 county offices, 5 tribal nations and several University of Wisconsin System campuses. The Dean will oversee an annual budget of approximately $80 million.

As the leader and chief administrator of the Division of Extension, the Dean exercises broad responsibilities for all aspects of financial, development, and administrative dimensions of this state-wide enterprise. Among other qualifications, Candidates must have earned a doctorate in a discipline relevant to the position, possess a record of scholarly achievement and academic accomplishments that would qualify for a tenured faculty appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; demonstrated ability to provide leadership for organizational development and change processes in a complex public institution; evidence of success serving a broad range of people that includes underserved and non-traditional populations; an enthusiastic commitment to Wisconsin’s tradition of shared governance with students, faculty and academic staff; a collaborative leadership style that emphasizes openness and consultation; and the ability to build effective relationships with community stakeholders.
