PRESIDENT

PRESIDENT

The Presidential Search Committee of Kean University invites applications and nominations of candidates in its search for the 18th leader of the University. The search follows the decision of Dawood Farahi, Ph.D., to leave his role as president after 17 years transforming Kean into a world-class university with campuses across the state of New Jersey and around the globe. Kean seeks an experienced and visionary leader who puts students first in advancing a comprehensive university. The next president will continue to focus on access and opportunity for Kean’s diverse student body while charting a course forward to ensure excellence across the University for years to come.

Founded in 1855, Kean University was the first public post-secondary institution in New Jersey. From its earliest days as a normal school for teacher training, Kean has transformed into a comprehensive, world-class university with state-of-the-art facilities and a faculty recognized for teaching distinction, scholarship and service. It is now the third largest public university in New Jersey with over 16,000 students from 26 states and more than 40 countries taking courses in 50 undergraduate programs and more than 60 graduate degree and certificate programs.

Kean’s main campus is in Union, New Jersey, with additional locations at Kean Ocean in Toms River, New Jersey and Wenzhou- Kean University in Wenzhou, China. The Skylands campus in Morris County, New Jersey, opened in Fall 2019 as the University’s newest instructional site.

With inspirational leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and deep enthusiasm for promoting the institution and its values amidst a culture of innovation, the next president of Kean University will embrace the following opportunities and challenges: leading a complex organization across multiple campuses; building on a culture of access, affordability, and student success; planning for the future; generating resources; bolstering Kean’s image and reputation; and working collaboratively with internal and external constituencies, among others.

The Presidential Search Committee seeks candidates who will embrace the distinctive nature and core values of Kean University and inspire its faculty, students, staff, alumni, and Board of Trustees. Kean University’s next president will be a visionary leader with experience managing a complex organization. He or she will demonstrate a highly relational approach; outstanding communication skills, authenticity, and self-confidence balanced with humility; integrity of the highest order; a strong work ethic; a clear understanding of the trends and challenges facing higher education; and experience navigating successfully in the new digital economy. While the Presidential Search Committee is eager to consider many possible pathways to the Kean University presidency, candidates possessing a terminal degree are preferred.
