Pontarelli Professorship in Environmental Sustainability and Finance

Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs seeks outstanding candidates for the Pontarelli Professorship in Environmental Sustainability and Finance. This is a fixed term professor of practice appointment with possibility of renewal. Candidates should have either a strong record of research or of linking research to practice; have interest in collaborating on interdisciplinary research projects; and have significant promise for teaching, particularly of undergraduates. Experience is required: for candidates with a Ph.D., at least 5 years of experience after receiving the degree; for candidates without a Ph.D., at least 10 years of appropriate experience in industry or advocacy.

We seek candidates whose scholarly research or professional career experiences in government, the private sector, or non-profit organizations center on environmental sustainability and finance, particularly in relation to climate change. We are especially interested in candidates whose research or career experience is in one or more of the following areas: renewable energy, sustainability and finance, adaptation to climate change and increasing community resilience, environmental risk management, or environmental and energy policy more broadly.

An important aspect of the position will be participation in broadly interdisciplinary teaching and research activities. We are particularly interested in applications from candidates who could contribute to such collaborations across the Maxwell School and wider university. Opportunities for collaboration within Maxwell include the Center for Environmental Policy and Administration; the Center for Policy Research; and the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Cooperation. Opportunities across the University more broadly include the University’s Sustainable Enterprise Partnership and the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems.

In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to a team of faculty advancing education and research on environmental and sustainability issues through the University’s undergraduate Environment, Sustainability, and Policy Integrated Learning Major or through the Sustainable Enterprise Partnership’s graduate Certificate of Advanced Study in Sustainable Enterprise. We strongly value excellent teaching, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses.

Finally, we seek candidates whose research, teaching, service, or lived experiences have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in our work with students, colleagues, and wider communities.
