New York University (“NYU”), the largest private university in the United States, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (“NYU Steinhardt” or the “School”).

NYU Steinhardt is a large, complex, and innovative school within one of the world’s preeminent research universities. Founded in 1890, it was the first professional school at a North American university devoted to teacher education. Today, the quality, reputation, and impact of the University have never been stronger, and NYU Steinhardt has built on its legacy of dynamism and bold leadership toward global recognition. Currently, the School ranks seventh on US News and World Report’s list of “Best Graduate Schools in Education,” with strengths that extend to a much richer set of disciplines beyond typical schools of education. NYU Steinhardt integrates programs in media and communication, applied psychology, music and the arts, health and nutrition, physical and occupational therapy, social science and humanities, applied statistics, and education to apply creative approaches to society’s challenges. The School has 295 full-time faculty, 251 full-time staff, 3,012 undergraduates, and 4,303 graduate and professional students, and offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs in 11 academic departments.

The School is a leader within NYU, particularly with regard to pedagogy and issues of diversity, equity, and belonging. Over the last 5 years, 56 percent of the School’s faculty hires have been women and 56 percent have been people of color. NYU Steinhardt faculty pioneered the Faculty First Look Scholar Program, which provides professional development for current doctoral or terminal degree students from historically underrepresented groups preparing for faculty or scholarly careers. Students of color account for 37 percent of the NYU Steinhardt student body, first-generation college students account for 19 percent of the School’s undergraduate class, and 21 percent of NYU Steinhardt students are international. Its diversity and size allow the School to cross-fertilize research, policy, theory, and practice and to be a pioneer for exciting areas of research and education. NYU Steinhardt has been among the first of the University’s schools to embrace experimental academic programs, online course and degree offerings, and interdisciplinary initiatives.

The University seeks a Dean who will seize this opportunity to advance NYU Steinhardt’s social impact, world-class research, pedagogical innovations, and interdisciplinary programs. The School’s next Dean will be an accomplished academic, a respected manager with team- and community-building skills, a persuasive and authentic storyteller with a sense of urgency about academic transformation, and a seasoned fundraiser. The Dean will add to the School’s legacy, build on its strengths, and continue its trajectory in both research and social impact. They should be a scholar or leader of distinction with a record of resourceful and creative problem-solving, effective execution, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Dean will foster an environment across the School that is inclusive and respectful for all persons.

New York University has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment of NYU Steinhardt’s next Dean. All nominations and applications should be submitted online via www.imsearch.com/7132.
