Assistant Professor - Marine/Atmospheric Chemistry

Brief Summary of Work for this Position              

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the broad area of marine or atmospheric chemistry. Ideally, the successful candidate will start August 2020. The successful applicant will enhance the department’s existing strengths in marine and atmospheric chemistry. He/she will be expected to establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, mentor postdoctoral scientists, and teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The applicant must have significant background in analytical chemistry because teaching duties include courses in this field. UNCW is anticipating approval for a Ph.D. in Applied Coastal and Ocean Sciences to begin in August 2022.

The department is well equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation on both the main campus and at the Center for Marine Science located 7 miles away on the Intracoastal Waterway. Information about the department and CMS can be found at uncw.edu/chem  and uncw.edu/cms .

Minimum Requirements             

A Ph. D. and a minimum of 1-year post-doctoral experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications              

A Ph.D. in chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, marine chemistry, or a closely related field is preferred.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit              

Chemistry & Biochemistry at UNCW offers exciting, student oriented programs that award Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS,ACS Certified) and Master of Science (MS) degrees. A significant portion of the training takes place in our laboratories, both those associated with courses, and those involving research in Marine and Atmospheric Science, Biochemistry, Organic and Inorganic Synthesis, Analytical, Pharmaceutical, Computational and Physical Chemistry and Chemical Education, all of which incorporate our state of the are instrumentation (http://www.uncw.edu/chem/ ). In addition to rigorous courses in all aspects of chemistry, most of our undergraduate students and all of our local graduate students carry out research under the direct supervision of our outstanding faculty.
