The School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an exceptional instrumental conductor for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level, depending on experience, beginning fall 2020.

About the School of Music

Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States and situated in the Sonoran desert, the ASU School of Music supports a broad range of inquiry. Programs within the School of Music lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music with an optional concentration in Music and Culture; Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music with concentrations in music performance, jazz studies, music theatre, music education, music theory and composition, or music therapy as well as three minors in music performance, music studies, and musical theatre; Master of Arts (MA) in Music with concentrations in ethnomusicology or music history and literature; and Master of Music (MM) in composition, conducting, music education, music performance, performance pedagogy, or music therapy. In addition, the school offers a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in composition, conducting, or performance and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a concentration in music education or musicology, as well as a graduate certificate in theory pedagogy. This Assistant Professor of Instrumental Conducting position will strengthen the broader vision of the School of Music: To create an environment that enriches and enlivens the role of music in our society. The successful candidate will serve as the conductor of the School of Music’s Wind Symphony, teach undergraduate and graduate conducting courses, mentor graduate conducting students, and collaborate with the conducting faculty to develop new initiatives within and beyond the School of Music that reexamine and reimagine the role of the large instrumental ensemble in the 21st century. Additionally, they will be expected to continuously and assertively advance their creative activity and research portfolio, actively connect with our secondary school, K-12 and collegiate music education colleagues, contribute to the School of Music’s recruiting efforts, and share various administrative duties with the Director of Wind Ensembles. Other responsibilities will include working effectively with faculty colleagues in service to satisfy and advance the mission of the ASU School of Music.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • DMA in Conducting or PhD in Music Education, or related field (ABD considered);
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching conducting and directing wind bands at the collegiate level;
  • Evidence of creative activity and research as demonstrated through both performances and presentations/publications;
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in creative activity and research, teaching, and service.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • National/International recognition in creative activity and research;
  • Experience teaching conducting at the undergraduate and graduate level;
  • Experience administering an instrumental ensemble program;
  • Interdisciplinary creative activity and research within and outside of the arts;
  • Experience teaching in or interacting with secondary school and K-12 music programs;
  • Experience collaborating with athletic bands at the collegiate level.
