Assistant Professor – Quantum Information Science
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Physics at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is seeking a quantum information scientist for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in modeling or synthesis of quantum- information systems or sensors, practical qubit design, electro/magnetic qubit manipulation, and/or algorithms for use on or emulation of near-term quantum computers. Successful candidates are expected to develop an independent externally funded research program; to mentor, teach and direct students/researchers from the undergraduate to postdoctoral levels; and to engage in outreach and service activities. Candidates with expertise in physics and other scientific research areas are welcome to apply. Anticipated appointment date is Fall 2020.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The UTEP Department of Physics currently enrolls more than 120 graduate and undergraduate students. The department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics and participates in the multidisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Materials Science and Engineering, Computational Science, Environmental Sciences and Biomedical Science. The department has active research programs in theory, condensed matter, computational physics, atomic and molecular physics, bio-, molecular- and nano- magnetism, nuclear physics, and atmospheric physics. Physics faculty and students benefit from state-of-the-art research laboratories for synthesis and structure-property investigations, optical spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance microscopy, and high-resolution imaging. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or related area, a demonstrated interest in quantum information science or computing, a strong record of research accomplishments, and the capacity to secure extramural funding. Postdoctoral experience will be given preference.
Hiring decisions are based upon budget approval.
