The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking to hire its 12th chancellor to lead the institution. Established in 1789 and serving students since 1795, UNC Chapel Hill is the oldest public university in the nation. For more than 225 years, the University has built a solid legacy upon nationally-recognized teaching, groundbreaking research, and dedication to public service. UNC Chapel Hill provides a world-class education to a diverse student body of over 19,000 undergraduates and over 10,000 graduate and professional degree students. Those students are taught by globally renowned and distinguished faculty of nearly 4,000 and served by a staff of over 8,000. UNC Chapel Hill is consistently ranked among the top public universities in the nation and world and is a leader in research, entrepreneurship, healthcare, public service, arts, and athletics.

UNC Chapel Hill is one of 17 institutions within the broader University of North Carolina System and works collaboratively with its fellow institutions across the state. The chancellor reports to the UNC System President and is responsible for carrying out the policies of the UNC Chapel Hill Board of Trustees and the UNC System Board of Governors.

Chapel Hill routinely ranks as one of the best college towns and places to live in the United States – a reputation bolstered by a wide range of cultural, social, and intellectual opportunities that span the campus and community. Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh form the Research Triangle Park that is known for world-class healthcare and groundbreaking research. RTP is the second largest research park in the country, home to more than 250 companies, and benefits from one of the largest concentrations of Ph.D.’s and M.D.’s in the world.

The candidate will possess an earned terminal degree, an outstanding record of teaching and research, exceptional leadership skills and experience, or have demonstrated successful leadership experience at the highest levels outside the academy with a proven understanding of higher education.
