Assistant Professor Forest Ecosystem Services

The Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University Carbondale seeks applicants for a 9 month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective August 16, 2020.  This faculty member will collaborate with SIU Forestry colleagues as well as synergizing with scientists in other programs such as Civil and Environmental Engineering, Energy Processes, Fermentation Science Institute, Coal Research Center, Agribusiness Economics, Tourism, Sustainability, Geography, and others.  The selected individual will contribute to teaching undergraduate and graduate Forestry students across programmatic specializations and will serve as a foundation or anchor point to establish a new undergraduate curriculum specialization.  Course teaching requirements may include: Forest Resources Economics, Forest Land-use Planning, Wood as a Raw Material, and other undergraduate and graduate level coursework.  Involvement in teaching of our intersession field courses is expected. The incumbent is expected to advise/mentor graduate and undergraduate students. The incumbent will be expected to develop an externally-funded research program with relevance to Illinois and Midwest region such as forest ecosystem services, urban tree utilization, harvesting, processing, and forest-based enterprises, or related emerging research areas and lead an outreach component to assist our citizens, businesses, and agencies stimulate the southern Illinois and broader regional economies.

Qualified Applicants, are required to have 1) Ph.D. in forestry, natural resource economics, forest products marketing, or other closely related natural-resources field by the effective date of hire. ABD applicants will be considered if all doctoral degree requirements will be completed by August 15, 2020.  If all degree requirements are not completed by that date, a term, non-tenure track appointment may be offered in accordance with University policy (http://policies.siu.edu/personnel_policies/chapter2/ch2-faps/conting.php).  2) Demonstrated experience or ability in teaching relevant coursework 3) Strong communication skills and interest in instruction and advisement of undergraduate and graduate students.  4) Demonstrated ability and strong interest in collaborative research with natural resource research scientists and other natural resource professionals to develop and maintain an active research program.   Preferred Qualifications: 1) In addition to the Ph.D., B.S. in Forestry from an SAF accredited university. 2) Record of publications in refereed journals and securing of external research grants.
