DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY

DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Southern Connecticut State University, a public comprehensive university in New Haven, Connecticut, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Founded in 1893 as New Haven Normal School, the University has evolved into a modern, urban, diversified center of higher learning serving approximately 10,000 students with excellent undergraduate and graduate programs. Southern is one of four comprehensive universities in the 17-member Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system. Its five colleges and schools offer more than 225 academic programs, leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as sixth-year professional diplomas and doctoral degrees in educational leadership, nursing education, and social work. Supporting the academic offerings are several nationally-recognized academic centers and several new campus facilities: a recently-expanded library, a new state-of-the-art science building, the recently-completed Barak H. Obama Magnet University School, and a new facility for the College of Health and Human Services soon to begin construction.

With 22 departments encompassing the fine arts, the humanities, the social sciences, and the STEM disciplines, the College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit at Southern.  What is more, since it bears the major responsibility for general education, its importance extends far beyond its many degree programs.  Given it size and its wide range of disciplines, the College is undergoing a notable restructuring to more adequately support the needs of its faculty and students. Additional innovative strategies will be needed to support the College in its efforts to engage in several strategic University-wide initiatives, including: the increased pace of program development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; the initiative to increase the support for faculty research and working toward a better balance between teaching and research; the significant number of new faculty that have been hired in the past few years and will be hired over the next few years; and the increased expectations for the role of deans in fundraising.

The next dean will have the opportunity to play a key role in helping the College navigate these changes creatively and successfully.  In doing so, the new dean will not only shape the evolution of the College, but also the evolution of the University as a whole. Moreover, given the College’s influence on academic success, the new dean will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of all of Southern’s students.

The ideal candidate will have faculty experience at the rank of associate professor or above; progressively more responsible leadership/administrative experience to the level of department chair or associate dean;  fundraising experience; experience with student success initiatives; a commitment to shared governance and experience working in a collective-bargaining environment; and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.

For more information and instructions to applicants, please review the position profile.  For fullest consideration, applications should be received by November 6, 2019.
