The Department of City and Regional Planning (DCRP), together with the Global Metropolitan Studies program (GMS) at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applications for a tenure- track faculty position in Global Urban Inequalities at the rank of Assistant Professor with an expected start date of July 1, 2020. Candidates must have the vision and drive to chart new intellectual territory, be committed to developing new initiatives and multidisciplinary collaborations, attract externally-funded research, and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence. Segregation, inequality, poverty, and the lack of adequate shelter and basic infrastructural services are enormous challenges confronting urban planners everywhere. In the Global South, these challenges acquire particular characteristics, as many cities are built by poor residents in significant ways and planning typically acts after the fact, re-urbanizing or upgrading what has been improvised before. DCRP and GMS seek a scholar whose research addresses these challenges in an international context. The ideal candidate would bridge theory, research and praxis to reveal the complexities of urbanization and development issues related to global poverty and inequality, the intensification of urban land and resource use, socio-environmental challenges, political economy, or the changing face of socio-political movements. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work focuses on the transformation of cities in the Global South, who examine the social forces, institutions, and power relations that mediate or exacerbate urban inequalities, and whose critical research supports more democratic, socially just, and sustainable forms of urbanization.

The research focus of this scholar could span any number of areas, including: urban political conflicts; public participation and democratic processes in cities; inequalities in infrastructure provision; land use and law; poverty and informality; population, migration, settlement, and displacement; emergent social movements; inequality and gender dynamics; and recasting urban theory and practice from the perspective of the Global South.
