ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Southern Connecticut State University, a public comprehensive university in New Haven, Connecticut, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Founded in 1893 as New Haven Normal School, the University has evolved into a modern, urban, diversified center of higher learning serving approximately 10,000 students with excellent undergraduate and graduate programs. Southern is one of four comprehensive universities in the 17-member Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system. Its five colleges and schools offer more than 225 academic programs, leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as sixth-year professional diplomas and doctoral degrees in educational leadership, nursing education, and social work. Supporting the academic offerings are several nationally-recognized academic centers and several new campus facilities: a recently-expanded library, a new state-of-the-art science building, the recently-completed Barack H. Obama Magnet University School, and a new facility for the College of Health and Human Services soon to begin construction.

The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Southern has primary responsibilities in curriculum development and support, program reviews, and accreditation.  This includes coordinating the program/course approval process between the academic departments, colleges and schools, campus curricular bodies, and the Board of Regents as well as serving as the Provost’s designee to university undergraduate and graduate curricular bodies.  The AVP will also assist the Provost in student-success initiatives, general education, undergraduate majors, and graduate programs.  The AVP’s portfolio includes supervision of some of the following areas:  First-Year Experience, the Liberal Education Program, Writing Across the Curriculum, International Education, and Faculty Development.

This important position will become even more critical in the years to come.  Southern has begun a period of accelerated program development to meet the emerging needs of the region.   In addition to the normal round of departmental and program reviews, Southern’s decennial regional reaccreditation visit is scheduled for 2021.  Southern is also redoubling its efforts to increase student success.  The AVP will have the opportunity to play a critical role in most of the current and future academic initiatives at Southern as well as to make a difference in the lives and academic success of Southern’s students.

The ideal candidate will have faculty experience at the rank of associate professor or above; at least three years of higher education leadership/administrative experience; a thorough understanding of curriculum and program development, review, assessment, and accreditation; supervisory experience; excellent organizational and analytic skills; a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; a commitment to shared governance and experience working in a collective-bargaining environment; and the ability to work collegially with a wide range of faculty and staff.
