The University of Massachusetts Lowell has a tenure track position open at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies (SCJS). The start date for the position is September 2020.

 

Responsibilities involve maintaining an active program of research, including pursuit of external funding, teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, supervising theses/dissertations, and engaging in departmental and university service.

Qualifications for Assistant Professor:

  • A Ph.D. in criminology or criminal justice is preferred. Applicants with PhDs in related areas—such as sociology, psychology, political science, economics, social work, and public policy-- will also be considered if they have a clear emphasis (teaching, research, and scholarship) in the area of criminology/criminal justice
  • Evidence of research and scholarship in the areas of sentencing and/or corrections
  • An initial record of high-quality scholarly output commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor at UMass Lowell

 

Qualifications for Associate Professor:

  • A Ph.D. in criminology or criminal justice is preferred.   • For Associate Professor applicants, an established record (as PI/ Co-PI) of obtaining external research funding in the areas of courts and/or corrections is needed, along with a record of high-quality scholarly output commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor at UMass Lowell. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on major grant-funded research projects
  • Experience working collaboratively with criminal justice agencies, social service agencies, and/or community groups

About SCJS:

The School of Criminology and Justice Studies (SCJS) is housed within the University’s College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS). The College is the largest unit of the University, with 11 academic departments and over 200 full time faculty. FAHSS has experienced significant growth in recent years, including hiring over 70 new faculty members, achieving a 70% growth in funded research expenditures, and the addition of several new interdisciplinary graduate programs.

 

SCJS enrolls over 700 undergraduate majors in Criminal Justice/Criminology, close to 400 master’s students, and approximately 50 doctoral students. The School offers an undergraduate degree in criminal justice, a master’s degree, four certificate programs, and a doctoral program with two concentrations:  criminology/criminal justice, and terrorism/security studies. The School also offers two master’s degrees and a certificate program in security studies.

 

SCJS currently has 24 full time faculty members, including 18 tenure track professors, 3 teaching professors, and 3 visiting professors. Faculty members specialize in a wide range of scholarly topic areas, including victimology, policing, institutional and community corrections, biosocial criminology, organized crime, terrorism, violence, the classification, treatment and control of sex offenders, criminal justice technology, and a full range of global justice issues. Faculty members have expertise in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, with a high level of scholarly output. Externally funded research by SCJS faculty is currently supported by several million dollars in grants from major funding agencies. The School’s faculty collaborate and partner with local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies, while also working in partnership with faculty and organizations globally. SCJS is home to four high profile academic journals: Crime & Delinquency, Victims & Offenders, Democracy & Security, and Perspectives on Terrorism.
