The Organization: The Consortium was created in 1966 to give African American men the business skills they need to secure positions in American corporations. Since that time, the mission has expanded to reduce the underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans in American business and graduate business schools. The Consortium is now an alliance of 20 top graduate MBA programs, 90 corporate partners, more than 1,000 students, and a robust network of more than 10,000 alumni. Each year, approximately 10,000 students enter a top 50 full-time MBA program, but underrepresented minorities comprise only 8% of the population. Companies realize that having diverse talent within their management ranks is imperative to promote short-term and long-term financial performance. However, the need for talent has become extremely competitive due to the number of Fortune 1000 companies, non-profit organizations, and the allure of entrepreneurship. Annually, The Consortium awards membership to over 500 MBA candidates. The candidates encompass over 60% of the underrepresented population of students attending a top 50 MBA program. Since inception, The Consortium has extended approximately $425 million in fellowship support, resulting in the success of over 10,000 MBAs. The Consortium’s corporate partners leverage their partnership to recruit top-level MBA talent for internships. Many of these internships lead to full-time employment. Corporate partners are also able to recruit Consortium alumni with post-MBA experience. The Consortium has also recently established a program for underrepresented undergraduate students in any academic discipline called Competitive Advantage.
