Job Purpose
Towson University invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication, with appointment to begin July 1, 2020. The College seeks an innovative and strategic leader to build upon the existing excellence of TU’s programs in fine arts and communication. The College’s outstanding faculty offer undergraduate and graduate programs in art and design, art history, art education, dance, electronic media and film, mass communication, communication studies, music, theatre arts, and interdisciplinary programs. Recognized as a fine arts center for Maryland, the College has state-of-the-art facilities that support academic programming and public events. TU enrolls close to 20,000 undergraduates and over 3,000 graduate students across six academic colleges (business, education, fine arts and communications, health professions, liberal arts, science and mathematics), has over 865 full-time faculty, and offers more than 65 bachelor’s, 45 master’s, and 5 doctoral programs. Our centrally located campus sits on 330 rolling green acres and is 10 miles north of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, 45 miles north of Washington D.C., and 95 miles south of Philadelphia.

Description
The Dean provides overall leadership for the College, reporting directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. Responsibilities include: creating an atmosphere that fosters student success; recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty and staff; building and maintaining relationships with community partners; overseeing accreditation and assessment of the College’s programs; sustaining an environment that promotes and furthers TU’s values of diversity and inclusion; developing and managing a budget with fiscal responsibility; working collaboratively with other academic leaders to achieve overall institutional goals; communicating internally with transparency and fairness; supporting the College’s public-facing programs; and engaging effectively with external stakeholders. The Dean must also be willing and able to contribute to raising funds in support of the College.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold an earned terminal degree in one of the disciplines associated with the College and possess a substantial record of intellectual/creative accomplishment, excellent teaching, and academic engagement that would qualify for appointment as a professor, with tenure in one of the college’s academic units. Applicants must have academic administrative experience of at least five years at the departmental level or higher, including experience with faculty and staff hiring, budget management, promotion and tenure, and instructional assessment. Other qualifications appropriate to the position include the ability to speak knowledgeably about the disciplines included within the College, a record of creative leadership and strong interpersonal skills, evidence of work with a diverse community, and engagement with development activities.
