Associate Professor in Counselor Education

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Associate Professor in Counselor Education & Supervision. The successful candidate will teach Master’s and doctoral level courses. Courses are offered face to face, hybrid, and through online formats. Additional responsibilities include dissertation committees, program development, student advisement and mentoring, serving on program, department, and university committees, service to the profession, and maintaining an active line of research and publication.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  The qualified candidate will have an earned Master’s degree in Counseling and an earned doctorate in Counselor Education from CACREP-accredited programs; minimum 4 years of experience as Assistant Professor or experience commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor; experience advising and mentoring students at the graduate levels; a record of service and involvement at a college or university; eligibility for licensure/certification in either school or mental health counseling;  excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills; demonstrated commitment to multicultural inclusion and social justice; a record of successful research and publication; graduate teaching and clinical supervision; membership in professional counseling organizations such as ACA and ACES.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  We are especially interested in candidates who bring expertise in school counseling, addictions, or trauma-informed counseling; experience serving on and chairing doctoral dissertation committees; leadership experience in state, regional, or national professional associations; and evidence of successful grant writing experience or grant management; ability to bring innovative teaching strategies to our counselor education program; and leadership experience in state, regional, or national professional associations.

SALARY: Competitive and dependent upon qualifications and experience.

EFFECTIVE DATE OF EMPLOYMENT:  August 16, 2020. Nine-month appointment on a tenure track. Summer school employment is available dependent upon program needs and personnel considerations.

DEPARTMENT, UNIVERSITY, AND COMMUNITY DESCRIPTION: The department consists of the Counseling Program and the Higher Education and Student Affairs Program. The Counseling Program offers a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and an M.S.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling.

Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive research university offering programs from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. Colleges include business, education, engineering and engineering technology, law, liberal arts and sciences, health and human sciences, and visual and performing arts. On-campus enrollment is approximately 18,000 students. The university also offers more than 200 extension courses each semester to students in communities throughout northern Illinois.

The main campus is located in DeKalb, 65 miles west of Chicago's "Loop" and 40 miles southeast of Rockford with three education centers in Hoffman Estates, Rockford, and Naperville. DeKalb/Sycamore, with a population of about 50,000, is a modern paradox, a rural/urban community. It is simultaneously recognized for its manufacturing and rich farmlands. The site of the first manufacture of barbed wire and the development of hybrid seed corn are evidence of its diversified history.
