Rice University

Provost

Rice University (“Rice”) invites nominations and applications for the position of provost.

Founded in 1912, Rice is recognized internationally as one of the world’s leading research universities. Located in the heart of Houston’s vibrant museum district, Rice’s 300-acre tree-lined campus sits next door to the world’s largest medical center and just a short train ride from downtown. Rice takes full advantage of its location in the nation’s fourth largest city by encouraging students to collaborate widely in pursuing pathbreaking research and creating innovative partnerships. Enrolling approximately 7,000 students, Rice offers more than 50 majors across six divisions of study to undergraduates as well as a variety of highly regarded research-oriented programs at the graduate level. Further, the University’s student-to-faculty ratio of 6:1 offers a highly personalized learning environment supporting student intellectual exploration and growth.

As Rice’s chief academic officer, the provost works in partnership with President David Leebron, senior administrators, the Board of Trustees, and Houston community leaders to promote excellence in each of the University’s academic, research, and creative programs and activities. The Office of the Provost articulates and advances the aspirations and goals of the Rice deans and faculty, facilitates the University’s research endeavors through strategic enhancement and deployment of resources, and develops new opportunities to raise the level of excellence in the University’s schools, departments, institutes, and centers. The provost will join a thriving, diverse, and ambitious university community - supported by an operating budget of $750 million and an endowment of $6.3 billion - and will serve as a member of an experienced and cohesive leadership team.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished scholar with deep administrative experience, ideally within a research-focused academic environment. Demonstrating dynamic leadership ability and placing a high value on cooperative and consultative decision-making processes, she/he/they will seek to advance Rice’s stature as an internationally renowned research university. The provost will build upon a substantially developed infrastructure to embrace the full breadth of the University’s teaching, research, and service goals, concentrating on the many research, educational, and human capital development opportunities available to further the University’s overall mission.
