Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics in the College of Natural and Health Sciences at The University of Tampa invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Organic Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level, starting in August, 2020.

The University of Tampa is a medium-sized, comprehensive, residentially based private institution of 9,200 undergraduate and graduate students. The University is ideally situated on a beautiful 110-acre campus next to the Hillsborough River, adjacent to Tampa’s dynamic central business district, which is a growing, vibrant, diverse metropolitan area. Responsibilities will include teaching and research in the successful candidate’s field of expertise and teaching chemistry courses as assigned by the department. 

Faculty at UT are expected to excel in teaching undergraduate students and to develop an active research program involving undergraduates within a culturally diverse student population. A typical teaching load is 12 contact hours (three to four sections of lecture and/or lab) in a 14-week semester. Additionally, faculty are expected to develop an active record of scholarly activity, which includes mentoring undergraduate students and conducting publishable research. Efforts to acquire internal and external funding to support research activities are expected. Dedicated research space and start-up funding will be provided. Candidates are also expected to conduct service within the environment of a predominantly undergraduate institution. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

A Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or a related discipline as of August, 2020 is required. Postdoctoral experience and teaching experience are desirable. The Department welcomes applicants of all professional backgrounds related to the field of Organic Chemistry; however, those with experience in bioorganic chemistry/chemical biology or in polymer or materials science are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics consists of approximately 30 full-time faculty and academic staff members and more than 220 majors. The Department awards degrees exclusively at the undergraduate level in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Marine Chemistry, and Physics. Students may pursue degrees certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) or accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) or the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC). About 25 majors graduate from the Department annually. The Department is equipped with many pieces of contemporary instrumentation, including a 300 MHz NMR, FTIR-ATR’s, GC’s, GC-MS’s, LC’s, LC-MS’s, an SEM, an ICP, and UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectrometers.

Current faculty research interests include the following:      

• Enzyme- and acid-mediated biodiesel production
• Asymmetric organocatalysis
• Preparation of lanthanide complexes for sensing applications
• Quantitation of nutrients in air and water
• Forensic analysis of explosive residues
• Molecular oncology of tumor suppressor genes
• G protein-mediated signaling and immunology
• Computational studies modelling phase interfaces
• Natural product isolation and structure elucidation
• Discovery of new organic photocatalysts
• Synthesis of carbon nanotubes
• Development of experiments for teaching laboratories

Review of applications will begin on October 7, 2019 and continue until the position is filled. Following an initial screening, applicants may be required to submit a brief video of their teaching.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Modest start-up funds and laboratory space are available.
